Sycamore volleyball falls to Northern Iowa

Cedar Falls, Iowa – Indiana State volleyball closed out their weekend road trip with a loss to Northern Iowa in three sets (11-25, 15-25, 16-25). The Sycamores fell to 9-13, 3-7 MVC while UNI improved to 17-5, 10-0 MVC.
 
The Trees were led by Kira Holland with 10 kills. Avery Hales contributed 16 assists and led the defense with eight digs, while Ella Scott added three blocks.
 
Set 1 | Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 11
The Panthers opened the set on a 9-2 run. A kill by Curry Kendall and a block by both Corinne Knapp and Ella Scott to give the Trees their largest run of the set, at 9-4. UNI would then go on a 15-7 run to close out the set. The Sycamores hit just a .091 to the Panthers' .520.
 
Set 2 | Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 15
Set two would bring the Sycamores their first lead of the match after an error by the Panthers and a Hadley Hardersen kill. The Panthers quickly responded with a 7-2 run to retake the lead at 8-5. A Kendall kill would give the Sycamores a chance to fight back into the set, however, the Panthers would go on a 5-1 run to stretch their lead to 13-8. Kills by Hardersen and Kira Holland would bring the Sycamores back within three, before the teams would exchange in a back-and-forth battle. The Panthers would end the set on a 5-0 run to go up 2-0 on the Trees.
 
Set 3 | Northern Iowa 25, Indiana State 16
The final set brought some life into the Trees. The first 18 points would see six ties before the Panthers would ultimately gain the lead and hold it through the end. After Holland recorded a kill to close the deficit 12-11, UNI scored four straight to take a 15-11 lead. The Sycamores were never able to string together more than two points in a row and ultimately dropped the final set to the Panthers.

News & Notes
  • Kira Holland now has 15 matches with double-digit kills this season.
    • She eclipsed the 300-kill mark on the season, needing only 17 kills to record her most in a single-season through her three years as a Sycamore.
  • Freshman Sydni Weber made her first career appearance
  • Indiana State hit .138 on the evening, marking the second-best hitting percentage this season against UNI by a Missouri Valley Opponent. The Sycamores now hold the second- and third-best percentage through October 25:
    • UIC - .192 (September 26)
    • Indiana State - .138 (October 25, this evening)
    • Indiana State - .135 (October 17)
  • Northern Iowa hit .374, the second-best effort by a Sycamore opponent this season (Miami (OH) hit .411 on August 30)
    • They tied for the most kills in a three-set match by an opponent with 47 kills (September 13 against Butler)
  • Northern Iowa continued their MVC win streak to 46 straight. They moved to 10-0 in league play this season.
  • A handful of team season lows occurred Saturday evening:
    • Tied their lowest team kill total (26)
    • Season low in total attacks by one (87)
    • Recorded fewest digs (32)
    • Tied season low in blocks (3, this marked fifth time)
    • This was only the second time the Trees didn't record a service ace (August 30 against Miami (OH))
