Holland posts most kills in 12+ years as Sycamores drop road match at Drake

Des Moines, Iowa – Indiana State volleyball opened their weekend road trip with a loss to Drake in four sets (27-25, 23-25, 19-25, 20-25). The Sycamores wrap up their weekend road trip at Northern Iowa on Saturday, October 25.

The Sycamores were led by Kira Holland with 26 kills and 15 digs. Kimora Whetstone also contributed double digit kills, tallying 10. Macy Lengacher added 13 digs. Ella Scott, Kira Holland, and Kimora Whetstone all contributed two blocks apiece. Avery Hales and Emily Weber were almost even with 23 and 22 assists, respectively.

Set 1 | Indiana State 27, Drake 25
The Sycamores came out evenly matched with the Bulldogs. The first 14 points saw seven ties. A kill by Avery Hales and an ace by Emmy Sher gave the Sycamores a two-point advantage, 9-7. The Sycamores were able to hold a two-to-three-point lead over the Bulldogs until two errors by the Trees and a kill by the Bulldogs tied the game up at 19. There would be five more ties to extend the set. Kills by Hales and Kira Holland took the Sycamores to victory in set one.

Set 2 | Drake 25, Indiana State 23
Indiana State opened set two with an early 5-2 run, thanks to kills by Holland and Hadley Hardersen. The Bulldogs then went on a run of their own to take the lead at 10-9. There would be five ties before a Kimora Whetstone kill gave the Sycamores a 16-15 lead. The set would stay close until the Bulldogs were able to string together a three-point run to take the lead 21-18. Despite a late kill by Hales, the Trees dropped the second set by just two points.

Set 3 | Drake 25, Indiana State 19
After the Sycamores took the opening point off a kill by Whetstone, that would be their only lead of the set. The Sycamores would battle back to tie the set at seven after two Bulldog attack errors. Drake continued their attack and took yet again a two-point lead. Kills by Whetstone and Holland would bring the Trees back even with the Bulldogs at nine. Drake then went on a 9-3 run to put them up 17-12. With a service ace by Hales and kills by Curry Kendall and Corinne Knapp, the Sycamores were back within two at 19-17. Another 4-0 run by the Bulldogs began to put the set out of reach for the Trees at 23-17. Despite a kill by Whetstone, the Trees could not come back and dropped their second set to the Bulldogs.

Set 4 | Drake 25, Indiana State 20
The fourth set started as a back-and-forth battle. The first 16 points saw six ties, with the Sycamores only holding the lead for one point after an Emily Weber ace. The Bulldogs would then go on a 5-0 run to get them to 12-8. Kills by Knapp and Whetstone would bring the Trees back within one at 13-12, however, Drake answered once again going on a 4-0 run to build a five-point lead. The Sycamores would attempt to battle back, but two-straight kills for the Bulldogs would end the set, handing the Trees their fourth-straight loss.
