MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Emma Kaelin and
Hannah Baudin tallied career highs in kills Friday evening, propelling Indiana State to a four-set win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (25-13, 21-25, 25-14, 25-21) inside the Larry O. Finch Center.
Kaelin had 16 kills on a .279 hitting percentage, and also added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. Baudin had 14 killls on a .321 hitting percentage, while
Jadyn Smith added 10 kills.
Emily Weber dished out a season-high 41 assists, while
Macy Lengacher registered a season-high 19 digs.
Indiana State took charge early, as two kills each from Baudin, Kaelin and
Ella Scott gave the Sycamores an early 10-2 lead. Consecutive kills from Smith midway through kept the lead at eight, and a pair of blocks during a four-point run put the Trees ahead 23-12. Smith closed out the first set with a kill, as Indiana State took the opening set 25-13.
Similar to the first set, Indiana State started strong in the second, with kills from Baudin and Smith putting the Trees ahead 4-0. The Sycamores' lead remained at four following a kill from Scott and multiple UAPB errors, but the Golden Lions battled back. A 5-0 run for the Golden Lions cut Indiana State's lead to a point, and another four-point run put Arkansas-Pine Bluff ahead. Two kills from Smith kept the Trees in it, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff took the last three points to win the second set 25-21.
Indiana State bounced back in the third set, as four different Sycamores recorded early kills to put the Blue and White ahead 7-3. UAPB came back to take the lead, but a four-point Sycamore run featuring a pair of kills from Baudin put the Trees ahead for good. Three straight kills from Kaelin put the Sycamores in command with a 20-13 lead, and the Trees took advantage of errors to close out the set. A block assist from Scott and Smith gave the Sycamores a 25-14 win in the third set.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff took an early lead in the fourth set, but the Trees responded with a five-point run, including a pair of kills from Scott, to take a 7-5 lead. Kills from Weber and Smith upped the Sycamores' advantage to 12-9, and back-to-back aces from Kaelin midway through extended the lead to 17-14.
Cadence Gilley broke things open late with a pair of aces, and Kaelin's 16th kill of the match closed out a 25-21 fourth set win for the Sycamores to seal their second win of the season.
