NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State applied the pressure early and never let up as the Sycamores evened the weekend series with a 10-1 Saturday afternoon win over Illinois State at Duffy Bass Field.
The Sycamores (28-8, 11-3) loaded the bases with the first five batters reaching base in the top of the first inning on Saturday afternoon against ILS starter Tyrelle Chadwick (3-4) in jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.
Parker Stinson and
Randal Diaz both homered to pace a 10-hit Indiana State offensive attack, while
Grant Magill drove in three runs as the Sycamores kept the Redbirds off-balance throughout the contest to even up the series.
Brennyn Cutts (5-1) was masterful on the mound for Indiana State as the redshirt junior turned in his third consecutive quality start in picking up the win. Cutts pitched out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the first inning and surrendered just a Daniel Pacella leadoff single in the fourth and a Daniel Contreras leadoff single in the fifth to keep Illinois State off the board. He retired the final 10 batters he faced to close out a 7.0-inning, two-hit, six-strikeout game on the mound.
The Sycamores put the game away in the top of the seventh as Magill connected on a two-run single in the frame and
Henry Brown followed with a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly, while
Zach Davidson and
Max McEwen worked the final two innings on the mound to close out the win.
Diaz,
Dominic Listi, and Magill all had two hits apiece for the Sycamores in the win.
Luis Hernandez,
Adam Pottinger, and
Mike Sears all doubled, while three ISU players were hit by pitches. Stinson added his third stolen base in the contest.
Chadwick took the loss allowing five hits and five runs while walking four over 3.0 innings on the mound. Erik Kubiatowicz, Lawson Minshew, Braden Roesch, and MacCallan Conklin went the final six innings to close out the game.
How They Scored
- Indiana State scored three in the top of the first inning as Parker Stinson and Adam Pottinger drew bases-loaded walks, while Josue Urdaneta beat out a fielder's choice allowing Luis Hernandez to score to stake the Sycamores to the early 3-0 lead.
- Stinson connected on a 465-foot home run to right center in the top of the third inning and Mike Sears added an RBI double to left center scoring Hernandez to put Indiana State up 5-0.
- Randal Diaz added to the Sycamore lead in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left center giving Indiana State the 6-0 edge.
- Grant Magill singled in Stinson and Sears in the top of the seventh inning, while Henry Brown connected on a sacrifice fly to center scoring Urdaneta to put Indiana State ahead 9-0.
- Magill singled back up the middle in the top of the ninth inning scoring Pottinger to put the Sycamores ahead 10-0.
- Auggie Rasmussen put Illinois State on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth inning with a leadoff solo home run to right center to provide the final 10-1 margin.

- Indiana State added two more home runs to their 2024 total with Parker Stinson (11) and Randal Diaz (8) both going deep in Saturday afternoon's contest. It marked the fifth consecutive game with multiple home runs and 17th game overall this season giving the Sycamores 58 total homers on the year.
- Josue Urdaneta ran his on-base streak to 25 consecutive games on Saturday afternoon as the second baseman drew a walk and was hit by a pitch in the contest.
- Since the start of the final series of the 2022 season, Indiana State has posted a 37-6-1 record in MVC play.
- The Sycamores have gone a perfect 15-0 in the second game of the series dating back to the end of the 2022 season.
- Brennyn Cutts posted his third consecutive quality start as the junior right-hander went 7.0 innings allowing two hits while striking out six. It marked Cutts' third game (Murray State, Bradley, Illinois State) he's allowed two or fewer hits and striking out at least six hitters.
- Cutts lowered his MVC-leading ERA to 2.39 over 52.2 innings, while lowering his opponent batting average to .188. He's posted a 5-1 record with a 54:22 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year.
