BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana State was unable to build on an early six-run lead as Indiana rallied back to split the season series against the Sycamores as the Hoosiers took the 16-7 win at Bart Kaufman Field on Tuesday night.
The two teams reversed roles from their earlier game this season at Bob Warn Field as the Sycamores (21-6) rallied back from a 6-0 deficit to take the opener against the Hoosiers in Terre Haute, 15-7, back on March 19. The Hoosiers (16-14) utilized six-run innings in both the fourth and sixth frames to secure the season split and run their winning streak over the Sycamores in Bloomington to four consecutive games dating back to 2018.
Parker Stinson went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and four RBIs to pace the Sycamore offense as Indiana State was clicking at the plate early.
Dominic Listi went 1-for-1 with three runs scored reaching base in all four plate appearances, while
Luis Hernandez homered for the eighth time in 2024 to stake ISU to the early lead.
The Hoosiers rallied back to tie the game on Tyler Cerny's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning, while Josh Pyne and Carter Mathison both added home runs to highlight the Indiana offense in the win.
Jacob Spencer (1-1) took the loss on the mound after allowing two hits and four runs (three earned) in 0.1 innings of relief work.
Cole Gilley went the first 3.1 innings in the start allowing five hits and four runs while striking out six in the no-decision. Eight different Sycamores took the mound overall on Tuesday night combining to walk nine Hoosiers in the loss.
Ethan Phillips (4-0) highlighted seven Indiana pitchers on the mound on Tuesday night going 2.0 innings and striking out four in taking the win. Jacob Vogel ended the contest striking out four of the five batters he faced to close out the IU victory.
How They Scored
- Indiana State took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Luis Hernandez followed Dominic Listi's single with a two-run home run to left center to give the Sycamores the early edge.
- The Sycamores added to the lead in the top of the second inning as Parker Stinson connected on a double down the left field line scoring Randal Diaz to put ISU ahead 3-0.
- The ISU lead hit 6-0 in the top of fourth inning as Stinson connected on a three-run home run to right center scoring Listi and Josue Urdaneta.
- The Hoosiers tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning with a six-run frame highlighted by Tyler Cerny's two-out grand slam to left field to even the score at 6-6.
- The Sycamores went ahead 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning on Mike Sears' RBI single to left field with Listi beating the throw home to put ISU back ahead.
- The Hoosiers plated six more runs in the bottom of the sixth with Josh Pyne connecting on the go-ahead two-run home run, while ISU walked in two runs and IU plated two more on a wild pitch and a Sycamore error to give home team the 12-7 lead.
- Carter Mathison's solo home run highlighted a three-run Indiana bottom of the seventh inning to give the Hoosiers the 15-7 lead.
- IU added their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on Devin Taylor's RBI single.
