Sycamores offense connects on season-high 21 hits in 14-2 win over Bradley

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State offense exploded for a season-high 21 hits and scored 14 runs as the Sycamores topped visiting Bradley on Friday night, 14-2, in the first game of the three-game Missouri Valley series.
 
The Sycamores (25-7, 8-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings courtesy of Luis Hernandez's early three-run home run in support of starter Jared Spencer as Indiana State took control of the game against Bradley (10-20, 4-6) early.
 
Ryan Vogel connected on a two-run home run for the Braves offense in the top of the fifth inning, but the Sycamores continued to strike throughout the lineup with eight players posting multi-hit efforts in the win. Randal Diaz capped the night with a walk-off three-run home run with one out in the eighth inning to secure the run-rule victory at Bob Warn Field.
 
Diaz, Dominic Listi, Luis Hernandez, Adam Pottinger, and Joe Kido all posted three-hit games on Friday night as the Indiana State recorded at least one hit in seven of the eighth innings against the Braves. Parker Stinson, Grant Magill, and Josue Urdaneta also added two-hit games as the Sycamores picked up their second eight-inning run-rule win of the 2024 season.
 
Listi, Hernandez, Stinson, Kido, and Magill all doubled in the win, while Hernandez and Diaz both homered to highlight seven extra-base hits on the day. Hernandez added his second five-RBI day of the 2024 season, while Diaz drove in a season-high four runs in the win.
 
Spencer went a career-high 4.1 innings on the mound as the Centreville, Mich. native recorded his second start of the 2024 season. The left-hander allowed three hits and two runs while striking out a career-high eight batters in taking the no-decision.
 
Cam Edmonson (5-0) went the final 3.2 innings in relief for the Sycamores striking out six while allowing four hits in the winning effort.
 
Vogel and Timmy O'Brien combined for four of Bradley's seven hits in the loss with Vogel's two-run home run in the fifth the Braves' lone extra-base hit.
 
Noah Edders (4-4) took the loss going 3.1 innings allowing 12 hits and seven runs, while Jack Stellano and Theo Zeidler closed out the game on the mound.
 
How They Scored
  • Indiana State took the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Luis Hernandez connected on a three-run home run off the scoreboard in right center scoring Randal Diaz and Dominic Listi.
  • Randal Diaz added to the lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single off the right field wall scoring Grant Magill, while Josue Urdaneta scored on Luis Hernandez's ground ball to give the Sycamores a 5-0 lead.
  • Hernandez and Parker Stinson connected on back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning to put Indiana State ahead 7-0. Hernandez drove in Listi, while Stinson's drive to left center scored Hernandez as the Sycamores continued to press the Braves early.
  • Ryan Vogel put Bradley on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field to cut the ISU lead down to 7-2.
  • Dominic Listi added to the Sycamores' lead in the bottom of the fifth with a double off the top of the wall in right center to score Joe Kido to give ISU the 8-2 advantage.
  • Diaz came around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give ISU a 9-2 lead.
  • Grant Magill connected on a two-run double down the left field line and set the stage for Randal Diaz's walk-off three-run home run to left center as the Sycamores scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 14-2 walk-off win over the Braves.
News & Notes
  • Josue Urdaneta ran his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games on Friday night as the second baseman connected on a second-inning single. He finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored from the plate on the day.
  • Jared Spencer had a career-high eight strikeouts on Friday night surpassing his previous mark of seven set back on March 19, 2023, against Michigan State.
  • Luis Hernandez connected on his ninth home run of the season tying Parker Stinson for the second-most on the Indiana State squad this year.
  • Randal Diaz's seventh home run to walk-off the Braves marked Indiana State's fourth walk-off win of the 2024 season and second in Missouri Valley play. ISU's first came in the 9-8, 11th-inning win over UIC back on March 30.
  • Indiana State's 21 hits on Friday night marked the most by the Sycamores since Indiana State connected on 22 hits back on February 26, 2022, against Minnesota.
