TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball's
Mike Sears was named this week's Mark Clinkenbeard Construction ISU Student-Athlete of the Week as announced by the athletic department on Monday afternoon.
Mike Sears homered four times over the weekend series against UIC and powered the Sycamores to a 4-0 week including a midweek win over Purdue. Sears posted a .353 batting average over the week with a 1.059 slugging percentage as the slugging third baseman scored a team-high five runs and drove in five RBI, while connecting on four of his team-leading 12 home runs. Sears posted a team-high 18 total bases, while adding a three-hit game in Saturday's 11-inning victory over the Flames to clinch the series.
Sears opened the week getting hit by a pitch and scoring a run in the Sycamores' six-run fifth inning to seize control in their 8-7 win over the Boilermakers. His solo home run in the bottom of the third inning in Friday's opener against UIC sparked a 10-run swing as the Sycamores rallied back in the 10-6 win over the Flames.
He posted his second three-hit game of the season in Saturday's extra-inning affair including a solo home run in the fifth to stake ISU to the 5-1 lead, while his single to lead off the bottom of the 11
th inning led to the eventual game tying run crossing the plate as ISU overcame an 8-7 extra-inning deficit to win 9-8.
Sears capped the week by homering twice on Sunday connecting on the go-ahead solo shot in the second inning, while his two-run home run in the sixth inning secured the 4-1 series sweep. It marked Sears' fifth career two-homer game and second of the 2024 season.
Overall, he leads ISU with 12 home runs making him the first Sycamore since 2018 to post back-to-back double-digit home run seasons.
The Mark Clinkenbeard Construction ISU Student-Athlete of the Week will be announced every Monday afternoon throughout the 2023-24 athletic season.
