Sycamore Softball back on the road this weekend at Marshall

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Softball will travel to Huntington, W. VA. this weekend to compete in the Marshall March Madness, which will be the last weekend of tournament play for the Sycamores before entering conference play. Games begin on Friday, March 8 and all five games throughout the weekend will have live stats available and Sunday's game against Marshall will be live streamed on ESPN+.

The Sycamores will play five games throughout the weekend, beginning with a matchup at 11 a.m. ET against Ball State and to wrap up Friday's play the Sycamores will take on Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. ET. On Saturday, ISU will play twice again, first taking on Ball State at 11a.m. ET and then turning around to play Notre Dame at 6 p.m. ET. ISU will wrap up their weekend Sunday morning with a matchup against the host, Marshall at 1:30 p.m. ET. 

Last Time Out
The Sycamores went 3-2 last weekend in Clarksville, Tenn. with wins over IUPUI, and Ohio (twice) while falling to SLU and Austin Peay. Indiana State now holds an overall record of 11-8 in the 2024 season. 

  • Hailey Griffin had a great weekend in Clarksville, Tenn for the Sycamores. Griffin threw her first collegiate no hitter in seven innings in the 4-0 victory over IUPUI. Griffin went 2-0 on the weekend where she also took the win in the circle over Ohio with a score of 5-2. In 14 innings pitched, she recorded seven strikeouts, allowing only five hits and two earned runs. 
  • Kennedy Shade recorded her second home run of the 2024 season in the 4-0 victory over IUPUI on Friday. Shade leads the Sycamores with a .408 batting average and leads the team in RBIs with 20. 
  • Livi Colip recorded her first collegiate home run in the 5-2 victory over Ohio on Saturday in Clarksville. 

The Opponents- Ball State 

  • Coached by Helen Peña who is entering her first season as head coach for Ball State.
  • 8-11 record in 2024 season.
  • The Cardinals lead the all-time series over the Sycamores 35-25. Last matchup between these two teams was in 2020. 
  • McKayla Timmons was named MAC softball player of the week early this season, posting a .529 batting average with 12 RBIs, five home runs and eight runs scored. Timmons hit at least one home run in the first four games of the tournament, and hit two in one game.

The Opponents- Notre Dame 

  • Coached by Deanna Gumpf who is entering her 23rd year as head coach for Notre Dame.
  • 8-8 record in 2024 season.
  • First ever matchup between Notre Dame and Indiana State. 
  • 2023 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Carlli Kloss returns to the 2024 Notre Dame roster. Kloss leads the Fighting Irish with 20 hits and 13 runs scored this season where she holds a .364 batting average. 

The Opponents- Marshall

  • Coached by Morgan Zerkle who is entering her first year as head coach for Marshall 
  • 11-9 record in 2024 season.
  • Marshall leads the all-time series over Indiana State 6-3. 
  • 2023 Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year, Sydney Bickel returns to the 2024 roster for Marshall where she leads the team with a .417 batting average, with 25 hits, 19 runs scored, and three home runs on the season.

The Sycamores will travel to Evansville, Ind. to begin conference play on March 12-13. Indiana State will play Evansville at 6 p.m ET Tuesday and again at 6 p.m ET on Wednesday.
