ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Indiana State men's basketball frequented the podium at the Marriott St. Louis Grand Hotel on Wednesday night for the 2024 Missouri Valley men's basketball awards night.

All five regular starters for Indiana State made the All-MVC Teams. Robbie Avila was the lone recipient of the First Team for Indiana State. The trio of Ryan Conwell, Jayson Kent, and Isaiah Swope all made Second Team, while Julian Larry got the nod for Third Team.

Ryan Conwell and Isaiah Swope were both named to the MVC Newcomer Team, while Julian Larry and Jayson Kent were selected to the All-Defensive Team.

Robbie Avila was the only Sycamore named to the first team and was in contention for the Larry Bird Player of the Year award. Avila is the first player to be selected to the First Team since Tyreke Key in 2020. Throughout the season, Avila averaged a team-high 17.6 PPG, to go along with 6.9 RPG and 3.86 AST/G in 29 total games. In league action alone, he stood at 18.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.7 AST/G. Avila shot 55.6% from the floor in the 29 games.

Ryan Conwell averaged 16.0 PPG and 5.4 RPG, good for third on the team in both categories. The 6-4 guard also finished third in total rebounds (163). Conwell finished second in total threes made (85) while leading the team in free-throw percentage with 87.3% (89-for-102).

Jayson Kent led ISU in field goal percentage (min. 40 attempts) with a 61.3% clip (141-for-230). Kent finished just shy of averaging a double-double in conference play, averaging 12.6 PPG and 9.3 RPG in 19 of 20 MVC games. He led the team in rebounding (236). Kent was third on the team in free throw percentage at 83.5%.

Isaiah Swope averaged the second-highest scoring average for ISU at 16.6 PPG. He led the team and was 11th in the NCAA Division I rankings in total three-pointers made (96). Swope was second on the team in steals (38). In 29 games played this season, he averaged the highest minutes-per-game mark among the Sycamores with 34.9.

Julian Larry was the only team member to play in all 31 games this season, and only missed one start due to choosing to sit on Senior Day allowing Jake Wolfe to start his last home game as a Sycamore. He averaged 10.6 PPG and led the team in total assists (139), good for 4.48 AST/G. He led the team in three-point field goal percentage (46.4%) with the fifth-most attempts, and he finished third on the team in field goal percentage (min. 40 attempts) shooting 52.9% from the field. 

Ryan Conwell and Isaiah Swope are the first pair of teammates to both make the Newcomer Team since 1999. Conwell earned Newcomer of the Week five times in the 2023-24 season, while Swope was a one-time recipient. It marked the fifth and sixth appearance by Sycamores on the team since the 1999 season.

Jayson Kent and Julian Larry both were selected to the All-Defensive Team as the ninth and 10th ISU players selected to the team in program history. Kent led ISU in total rebounds with 236 and recorded the league's only 20-rebound game, which moved him into tying for eighth in ISU program history for single-game rebounds. Larry was the team's leader in steals (49) and received the honor for the second consecutive season.

The MVC Tournament
The 2024 MVC Tournament kicks off tomorrow, March 7. With Indiana State earning the No. 1 seed, the team gets a bye through the first round and will play its opening game on Friday, March 8 at 1 p.m. versus the winner of No. 8 Murray State/No. 9 Missouri State.
