Sycamores defeat Ohio, fall to Austin Peay on day 2 of Governors Classic

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Indiana State Softball went 1-1 in Saturday's games where they defeated Ohio and fell to Austin Peay. The Sycamores are 2-2 in the Governors Classic and will play one more game tomorrow morning against Ohio. 

Game one: Indiana State 5, Ohio 2

Indiana State won their first game on Saturday against Ohio with a score of 5-2. 

Ohio took the lead early in the second inning where they scored one run. 

The Sycamores struck back in the fourth inning where they took the lead over the Bobcats 2-1. Isabella Henning led off the Sycamores with a double followed by a single by Lauren Marsicek who advanced to second on the throw and Hannah Welch scored. Kenzie Cornwell kept the hitting streak going when she recorded a single which advanced Marsicek to third. Marsicek scored on a throwing error by the catcher to advance the Sycamores lead to 2-1.

Indiana State scored two more runs in the fifth inning to further the Sycamores lead to 4-1. Abi Chipps led off with a single and an RBI single by Isabella Henning scored Chipps. Kennedy Shade kept the bats going when she recorded a double advancing Isabella Henning to third. Morgan Goodrich drove in the second run when she singled to left field and scored Isabella Henning

Livi Colip added the final run in the victory in the sixth inning when she recorded her first home run of the 2024 season, advancing the Sycamores lead to 5-1 over the Bobcats. 

The Bobcats added a run in the seventh inning with an RBI triple by Emma Hoffner cutting the Sycamores lead to 5-2, but Indiana State got the final out to take the win.

Hailey Griffin (2-0) took the win in the circle for the Sycamores, throwing a complete game, where she allowed five hits and two runs scored in the victory.  

Game two: Austin Peay 8, Indiana State 0 (5inn.)

The Sycamores fell to Austin Peay 8-0 in a five inning run-rule in game two on Saturday. 

Indiana State struggled to get their bats going in game two, where Abi Chipps recorded the solo hit for the Sycamores in the first inning. 

The Governors started the lead early in the first inning, scoring two runs when Kylie Cambell recorded an RBI triple to put the first run on the board. Austin Peay continued their lead when they scored three runs in the fourth inning and closed out the game with three more runs in the fifth inning when Mea Clark connected on an RBI single to drive in the final two runs in the run-rule win over the Sycamores. 

Lauren Sackett (5-4) took the loss in the circle for the Sycamores where she went 4.0 innings with two strikeouts, allowing six hits and five runs scored in the loss. Megan Asher took over the ball in the fifth inning where she recorded one strikeout for Indiana State and allowed three hits and three runs scored.

The Sycamores will play their final game of the weekend tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. ET. with a matchup against Ohio.
