Sycamores unable to contain early Southern Miss offense in Saturday setback

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss jumped ahead early in the second game of the weekend series and Indiana State was unable to fully complete the comeback as the Sycamores fell to the host Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon, 6-2, at Pete Taylor Park.

Indiana State (7-3) fell for the second time in as many days to Southern Miss (8-3) in the early season nonconference matchup. The Golden Eagles plated four early runs in the game to seize control early in support of a strong pitching performance from Billy Oldham (2-0) to claim the series win.

Southern Miss took the early lead courtesy of a two-run Slade Wilks double and added runs on a fielder's choice and a balk to go ahead early in a series that has seen pitching dominate the hitting. ISU starter Luke Hayden (1-1) bounced back from the early start to go 3.1 innings striking out five before turning the ball over to the Sycamore bullpen.

Cameron Holycross went 3.2 innings in an extended relief outing. The redshirt senior struck out five and retired seven batters in a row at one point to keep the game within striking distance.

The Sycamores plated two runs against Oldham (2-0) in the top of the fourth with Connor Hicks driving home Dominic Listi, while Adam Pottinger connected on an RBI single through the middle scoring Luis Hernandez to cut into the lead.

Indiana State had a chance to close the gap in the eighth inning against USM reliever Colby Allen as the Listi and Randal Diaz connected on leadoff singles to put two on, none out in the frame. However, ISU hit into a double play to limit the scoring chance and Southern Miss plated two late runs to provide the final 6-2 margin.

Listi went 2-for-4 to pace the Indiana State offense on the day, while Luis Hernandez added his first stolen base of the season. Dom Krupinski also added his first single of the year in his 2024 debut on the field.

Hayden took his first loss on the mound surrendering six hits and four runs while walking three and striking out five. Holycross allowed the final two runs while surrendering four hits with five strikeouts, while Simon Gregersen pitched the Sycamores out of a jam to record a scoreless eighth inning.

Carson Paetow homered among his team-high three hits on the day as the Southern Miss lineup connected on 10 hits overall in the contest. Dalton McIntyre and Slade Wilks also had multi-hit games in the win.

Oldham went the first five innings on the mound for USM allowing three hits and two runs while striking out seven in his second win of the season. Allen went 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, while JB Middleton worked a perfect ninth inning to close out the contest.

How They Scored
  • Southern Miss plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game early. Slade Wilks provided the big hit with a two-run double to right, while Seth Smith brought home Wilks on a fielder's choice and Carson Paetow scored on a balk to give USM the early 4-0 lead.
  • The Sycamores took two back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half. Connor Hicks brought home Dominic Listi with a fielder's choice in the frame, while Adam Pottinger singled home Luis Hernandez to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
  • Southern Miss added to the lead in the seventh on Carson Paetow's solo home run to put the score at 5-2.
  • The Golden Eagles plated the final run in the bottom of the eighth on Nick Minstere's RBI double to left field scoring Seth Smith to provide the final 6-2 margin.
