CINCINNATI, Ohio – Indiana State broke the game open with a seven-run top of the seventh and added five more runs in the eighth as the Sycamores topped host Xavier, 16-5, in the weekend opener at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon.
Luis Hernandez went 5-for-5, connected on two home runs, and drove in five RBIs in pacing an Indiana State (13-3) offense that recorded season-highs in both runs scored (16) and hits (18) on the afternoon.
Parker Stinson and
Mike Sears also homered on the day, while
Randal Diaz connected on three doubles as the Sycamore attack saw nine of the 10 hitters in the game record hits and score.
Dominic Listi, Stinson, and
Josue Urdaneta all doubled, while six ISU batters were hit by pitches as the Sycamores put consistent pressure on the Xavier (8-10) pitching staff throughout the game.
Leading 4-3 in the top of the seventh following a Xavier pitching change, the Sycamores teed off on reliever Alex Vera with Diaz greeting him with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Hernandez connected on his second home run of the game with a shot over the wall in left center to put ISU ahead 6-3. Three batters later, Sears added to the margin with a two-run home run scoring
Adam Pottinger to make it an 8-3 ballgame.
Before the inning was finished,
Josue Urdaneta added a two-run double to left center and Diaz connected on his second double of the inning bringing home Urdaneta to put the lead at 11-3.
Xavier battled back with Hayden Christiansen and Isaac Wachsmann's back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Sycamores continued to rally in the eighth inning to put the game away.
The final eighth inning featured Indiana State scoring five runs over a two-out rally sparked by
Parker Stinson's ground-rule double down the left field line, while five ISU players were hit by pitches in the inning to put ISU ahead 16-5.
Zach Davidson struck out three of the four batters faced in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the Indiana State win and close out the shortened game.
Cam Edmonson (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with a 3.0-inning relief appearance. The redshirt senior allowed three hits and three runs in calming down the Xavier offense.
Cameron Holycross went the first 4.0 innings allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out two.
Zach Davidson pitched around a one-out single to retire the final two batters on strikes to end the game.
Luke Hoskins (2-3) took the loss on the mound for the Musketeers allowing eight hits and four runs over 6.0 innings of work. Alex Vera, Terry Murray, Jack Niedringhaus, Nathan Stahl, and Jimmy Starnes went the final two frames in the loss.
How They Scored
- Indiana State struck in the top of the first inning as Luis Hernandez homered over the wall in left center scoring Dominic Listi to give the Sycamores the early 2-0 lead.
- Parker Stinson connected on a solo home run over the center field wall in the top of the fourth to put the Sycamores ahead 3-0.
- Jake Lambdin put the Musketeers on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI groundout scoring Jared Cushing to cut the ISU lead down to 3-1.
- The Sycamores added another run in the fifth on Hernandez's RBI single back up the middle scoring Randal Diaz to make it 4-1 ISU.
- Xavier responded with Matt McCormick's solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit down to 4-2.
- It was 4-3 Sycamores after Xavier's Luke Hammond connected on a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth.
- Indiana State sent 11 batters to the plate with Hernandez and Mike Sears both connecting on two-run home runs, while Josue Urdaneta added a two-run double to left center to highlight a seven-run inning as Indiana State went ahead 11-3.
- Xavier responded with back-to-back Hayden Christiansen and Isaac Wachsmann solo home runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit down to 11-5.
- The Sycamores mounted another big inning in the top of the eighth with ISU getting hit by five pitches in the frame, while Listi added a two-run single to highlight a five-run inning as Indiana State again sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning to provide the final 16-5 margin.
News & Notes
- Luis Hernandez went 5-for-5 from the plate and was hit by a pitch as the junior first baseman reached base safely in all six plate appearances on Friday afternoon.
- Hernandez's five-hit day marked the first five-hit game by a Sycamore since Jordan Schaffer went 5-for-6 against Dallas Baptist on May 30, 2021, in the 11-inning MVC Championship game in Carbondale, Ill.
- Hernandez's five-hit game extended his personal-best and team-high 15-game hitting streak on the season raising his batting average to .388 on the season. He has posted 12 hits over his last 14 at-bats dating back to March 10 against Florida A&M with two home runs, seven RBIs, and seven runs scored over the span.
- Dominic Listi extended his on-base streak to 16 consecutive games to open the 2024 season following a first-inning double. He finished 2-for-6 from the plate in the win.
- Randal Diaz's three-double game made him the first Sycamore to achieve the feat since C.J. Huntley connected on three doubles against Bradley back on May 17, 2019.
- Luis Hernandez's multi-homer game was the first of his career and Indiana State's second of the seasons.
- Hernandez and Mike Sears (Mar. 8 at FAMU) are the first ISU teammates to post multi-homer games in the same season since Seth Gergel. (Valparaiso – March 25, 2023) and Sears (three times in 2023) posted two-homer games in 2023.
- Cam Edmonson was back on the mound for the first time since coming in a relief role against Vanderbilt (Feb. 27).
- Indiana State improved to 2-0 in Cameron Holycross' starts in 2024 and 3-0 in the last two seasons dating back to his 3.0-inning start at SEMO back on March 8, 2023.
