Staggs repeats as MVC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Indiana State pole vaulter Will Staggs was named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week Thursday, as announced by the conference office.

Staggs broke Indiana State's school record in the pole vault at the Meyo Invitational, becoming the first athlete in program history to clear 18 feet in the event. He cleared marks of 5.05m (16-06.75), 5.20m (17-00.75), 5.35m (17-06.50) and the record-breaking mark of 5.50m (18-00.50), all on his first attempts, on his way to a first-place finish in the event.

In the process, Staggs became the first MVC athlete since 2001 to clear 5.50m or better in the pole vault. He ranks first in the MVC, second in the Great Lakes region and 10th in the nation in the event.

The weekly honor is Staggs' fourth MVC Field Athlete of the Week selection this season and the fifth of his career, as he also earned the honor once during the 2022-23 indoor season. Indiana State has earned eight MVC Athlete of the Week honors this season.

A second straight split-squad weekend awaits for Staggs and Indiana State, which will send athletes to the GVSU Big Meet, Marian Indoor Invitational and Tyson Invitational Friday and Saturday.
