D1BASEBALL – Indiana State shortstop
Randal Diaz was listed among the nation's best at the NCAA Division I level according to the preseason D1Baseball positional rankings as the website continues to unveil its top-50 players at each position heading into the 2024 season.
Diaz (No. 21 shortstop) joins teammates
Grant Magill (No. 42 catcher) and
Josue Urdaneta (No. 44 second baseman) on the list following a standout season for Indiana State featuring ISU's first trip to an NCAA Super Regional, as well as winning the MVC regular season, championship, and the NCAA Terre Haute Regional.
Diaz was named the 2023 Missouri Valley Baseball Championships Most Outstanding Player pacing the Sycamores with a .455 batting average over the five games at Bob Warn Field and finishing with a team-high 10 hits and six runs while driving in three RBIs. The shortstop added a .727 slugging percentage and a .520 on-base percentage as ISU's leadoff batter in the tournament.
The Toa Alta, Puerto Rico native posted multi-hit games in four of ISU's five tournament contests and scored runs in four different games to pace a Sycamore offense that outscored its opponents 39-12 in the postseason. Diaz connected on a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to give ISU a 2-0 lead over Evansville in the championship game. He followed up in the top of the ninth with an RBI single to provide the final margin in the Sycamores' 6-0 win.
Diaz was one of three Indiana State players to line up in all 62 games in the 2023 season, earning 61 starts. He finished third on the team with a .297 batting average with a team-high 74 hits over 249 at-bats, leading the Sycamores with 15 doubles and three triples, while finishing third with 10 home runs. He scored 47 runs while driving in 36 RBIs.
Adept at the leadoff position in the order, Diaz enters the 2024 season on a 20-game on-base streak.
