ISU Men’s Basketball Fans Raise Over $10,000 For Leading Cancer Research Center

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State men's basketball hosted their fifth consecutive Blackout Cancer game on February 3 where, in addition to being triumphant against Drake University, fans raised $10,317.14 for the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center.

Fans attending the game on February 3 were able to learn more about the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center. Part of Indiana State University's College of Arts and Sciences, the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center was established in 2020 by a generous donation from Alumni of the same name. The laboratory is a premier training center for the next generation of cancer researchers and aims to be a leader in the global fight to cure cancer.

"All of us at Indiana State University want to thank everyone for helping fund cancer research at Indiana State's Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center. This state-of-the-art facility, led by our wonderful faculty, staff, and students is making a remarkable difference, and the support of every individual truly makes an impact. We look forward to continuing this tradition again next year," said Dr. Deborah Curtis, President of Indiana State.

In addition to a portion of ticket sales automatically donated to the center, fans could also make contributions through donation buckets and an online fundraiser. The total amount raised from ticket sales and donations was $5,317.14. The center then received match funding of $5,000 from Rich and Robin Porter bringing the total amount raised to a whopping $10,317.14.

"Since we launched the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center, we have continued to push the boundaries of education to help prepare the next generation of cancer researchers. By partnering with Sycamore Athletics, we have helped to make it easy for attendees to support this essential cause," Director of Porter Cancer Research Center, Dr. Takuya Akiyama said. "54% of Americans say they or someone else in their immediate family has been diagnosed with cancer at some point. Our aim is to help stamp cancer out completely, thanks to the research carried out at the Center and by Alumni at other institutions."

The Blackout Cancer game is part of an annual series of events raising funds for cancer research and care, with the next game on February 24 against UIC raising funds for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Fans are encouraged to wear black at this game, with a black t-shirt giveaway sponsored by Mark Clinkenbeard Construction, Wright's Pool Service, Justin Campbell – Campbell Lending Group – Fairway Mortgage, and U.S. Lawns.
