TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men's basketball made its 2024-25 home debut one to remember for head coach
Matthew Graves as the Sycamores gave their head coach his first win inside the Hulman Center with the 93-48 victory over Eureka College on Thursday night.
Samage Teel posted his second consecutive 20-point game in leading 11 different Indiana State (1-1) players in the scoring column.
Jaden Daughtry (15),
Markus Harding (10), and
Derek Vorst (10) all scored double-digits as the Sycamores took the lead from the opening tipoff and never trailed in the win over the Red Devils.
Richard Goodall, the Season 19 winner of America's Got Talent, put the Hulman Center crowd on its feet with a rousing rendition of the national anthem. Sycamore fans did not have time to sit down before back-to-back layups from Daughtry and Teel gave Indiana State an early 4-0 lead.
The Sycamores' lead hit 18-7 with 14:25 remaining in the first half thanks to a 10-0 run sparked by a Teel layup and capped on
Jahni Summers' driving layup to give Indiana State its first double-digit lead against the Red Devils.
The lead hovered around a double-digit advantage through most of the first half before the Sycamores took control of the contest over the final three minutes of the period. A
Derek Vorst dunk with 3:11 to play in the first half sparked a 10-3 run capped by a
Jayan Walker layup and a Daughtry free throw as Indiana State went into the break leading 48-29.
Eureka's Emaryon Byrd put the Red Devils back in the scoring column with the first points of the second half, before the
Markus Harding connected on a free throw and Summers followed up a Teel miss with a tip-in layup to give Indiana State the 51-31 lead with 17:40 to play in the second half. The lead hit 30 points a little over three minutes later as Vorst powered into the paint with a hook shot to give Indiana State the 66-36 advantage with 14:12 to play.
Bruno Alocen continued the Indiana State run with a three-pointer at the 12:36 mark putting the Sycamores ahead 73-36. The Indiana State bench continued the scoring run and defensive pressure over the final minutes of the contest holding Eureka scoreless for a six-minute span late, while
Merritt Alderink and Daughtry both connected on late dunks to cap the 93-48 victory.
Teel finished 8-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line on his way to scoring a game-high 20 points. He added five rebounds and five assists in the win. Daughtry and Alderink both tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, while Summers led the team with four of Indiana State's 13 steals in the contest. Harding and Vorst added 10 points apiece and combined for nine rebounds, two assists, and a blocked shot down low.
Overall, the Sycamores shot 52.8% from the floor, 70.6% from the free throw line in the win.
Byrd led Eureka's offense with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from behind the three-point line. Jaxson Provost scored 11 points off the bench and added a steal for the Red Devils.
