Sycamores win game two in Nassau; plays third and final game on Sunday against Tarleton State

NASSAU, Bahamas – Indiana State snapped a two-game skid with a win over Iona, 83-80, in its second game of the Baha Mar Hoops event to move to an even 4-4 on the season. The Sycamores are now 1-1 in the event.

The game started tight but Iona on three-straight possessions recorded a steal and a bucket that led into the first media timeout with the score 16-8 with 15:07 on the clock. The Sycamores recorded four total turnovers in that span but only three through the rest of the half.

The Sycamores found themselves in a 25-14 deficit but cut the lead to four, 26-22, right before the midpoint of the half. Jaden Daughtry made a layup, then Bruno Alocen followed with a triple coming out of the second media timeout. Almost a minute later in the next possession, Alocen knocked down another trey off an assist by Jayan Walker who just came on the floor to trail by four.

The Sycamores and Gaels exchanged two triples apiece on back-to-back-to-back-to-back possessions, with Camp Wagner and Josiah LeGree knocking in the two for Indiana State.

K'mani Doughty made a pair of free throws, then on the defensive end of the floor LeGree knocked the ball loose from a Gael that was picked up by Daughtry. LeGree was then rewarded by making a right-handed layup to give the Sycamores the 34-32 lead.

Iona then scored eight-straight to take back the lead 40-34 but two triples from Doughty and LeGree knotted the game at 40 before each team made a couple more baskets to have the game tied at 45-45 at the break.

An exchange of buckets started the second half, and Indiana State held a two-point, 57-55 lead just over five minutes in. Samage Teel and Daughtry each made a layup to put the Sycamores up five only for Iona to strike for a 9-0 run to go up 68-64 with 8:25 to play. Camp Wagner made a triple at the 8:02 mark for the last basket before the under-eight media timeout.

Wagner's trey was the last basket until an Iona stepback jumper broke the scoring drought between the two teams. The jumper gave Iona a 70-67 advantage before Teel made a driving layup and LeGree recorded his first dunk of the season off an unselfish fastbreak assist by Doughty; that put the Sycamores up one, 71-70 with 3:46 remaining.

Both teams exchanged points, this time from the line. Alocen made two, Iona made two, then Daughtry made a pair all with 36 seconds of game time.

After the free throws, Teel and Alocen each scored at the rim in straight possessions to put the Sycamores up 79-72 with 52 seconds to play.

The Gaels made the last 22 seconds interesting, but the Sycamores answered each attack made by Iona. A triple at the 22-second mark by Iona cut the Indiana State lead down to four, but LeGree made a the front-end of a one-and-one to hold an 80-75 lead with 19 seconds left.

Iona grabbed the rebound off the second free throw and ran down to drain a three-pointer with 12 seconds left for an 80-78 ballgame in favor of Indiana State.

Teel made a free throw, followed by two Iona points from the line to make the game an 81-80 game with six seconds to play.

Doughty was fouled off the inbound pass and converted to clutch free throws to ice the game, and the last-second three-pointer by Iona was off the mark for Indiana State to earn the 83-80 victory.

K'mani Doughty led the Sycamores in scoring with 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting, making 6-of-7 from the line. Jaden Daughtry scored 16 points going 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe, grabbing six rebounds and three steals. Josiah LeGree finished with 14 points on 5-for-8 from the floor, pulling down four rebounds and four assists. Samage Teel scored 13 on 5-for-9 shooting with eight rebounds. Bruno Alocen rounds out the five in double figures with 12 points on 3-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line.
