DES MOINES, Iowa – Homestanding Drake used a 16-0 run across the first and second quarters Thursday night and never looked back on its way to a 77-47 win over Indiana State inside the Knapp Center.
Asia Donald led the Sycamores with nine points off the bench, while
Chloe Williams added seven.
Savannah White pulled down a team-high five rebounds, while
Deja Jones dished out three assists in her first Missouri Valley Conference contest.
Indiana State got within a point early on following a 10-0 run which featured six points from
Mya Glanton. The ensuing 16-0 run for Drake saw the Trees go down by double-digits, and the Bulldogs further extended their lead by outscoring the Sycamores 29-8 in the second quarter. Indiana State showed fight in the second half and outscored Drake in the fourth quarter, but the early run was too much for the Sycamores to overcome.
First Half
Drake opened the game on an 11-0 run, but the Sycamores countered with a double-digit scoring run of their own. Glanton opened the scoring for the Trees with a pair of layups and
Bella Finnegan added a midrange jumper to cut the deficit in half. Consecutive layups from
Ella Sawyer and Glanton whittled Drake's lead down to 11-10, but the Bulldogs ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 17-10 advantage into the second.
Similar to the first quarter, Drake opened the second on a 10-0 run and never looked back. White and Williams connected from the charity stripe to end the run, and Donald added a layup for the Sycamores' first basket of the quarter, but Indiana State found itself down 33-15 by that point. A 9-0 run from Drake further extended the Bulldogs' lead, before
Kiley Bess knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing. Drake added four points inside the final minute, and took a 46-18 lead into the intermission.
Second Half
Chelsea Cain opened the third quarter with a layup and Donald connected on a jumper, as Indiana State attempted to get itself back in the game. Donald added a layup in the late stages of the quarter, while Indiana State went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the third, but the Sycamores found themselves down 64-32 heading into the fourth.
Indiana State turned to its bench for the fourth quarter, as Williams got things started with a basket down low.
Leah Yarbrough and
Jailah Pelly got on the scoreboard for the first time in their Indiana State careers, while
Saige Stahl added a second chance bucket midway through the period. Williams tacked on a pair of late baskets for the Sycamores, but Drake closed out a 77-47 win over the Trees.
