Flames defeat Sycamores behind third-quarter outburst

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State led for nearly all of the first half Sunday afternoon, but a third-quarter scoring surge from visiting UIC propelled the Flames past the Sycamores, 76-48, inside Hulman Center.

Keslyn Secrist led the Sycamores with a career-high 14 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 mark from the charity stripe. Mya Glanton corralled a game-leading eight rebounds to go along with six points, while Chelsea Cain and Kiley Bess added seven points apiece.

Indiana State led by a point after the opening quarter and extended its advantage to 30-19 late in the second following an 8-0 run, but UIC took full control of the game from there. The Flames ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run and outscored the Sycamores 30-6 in the third to take a 20-point lead. A Bella Finnegan jumper to start the fourth was followed by a 7-0 Flames run, effectively putting the game out of reach.

First Half
Glanton opened the scoring for the Sycamores with a jumper and a pair of free throws from Secrist gave Indiana State an early 4-2 lead. Consecutive baskets from Cain kept the Sycamores in front midway through the quarter. Glanton and Bess added layups inside the last two minutes, as the Trees took a 12-11 lead into the second.

A pair of 3-pointers from Ella Sawyer got things started for the Sycamores in the second quarter, and Glanton tacked on a layup to make it 20-15 in favor of the Trees two minutes into the period. UIC got within three midway through, but a three-ball from Cain kickstarted an 8-0 run for the Blue and White. Bess added another trey and Finnegan made it 30-19 with a jumper. Indiana State hit a cold spell late in the half, as UIC closed on a 7-0 run to get within 30-26 at the intermission.

Second Half
Things started to unravel for the Sycamores in the third quarter, as Indiana State went scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the frame. UIC rattled off a 14-0 run to open the half before Secrist connected on a pair of free throws and a layup to get the Sycamores within six at 40-34. Indiana State only had one other basket in the quarter, a layup from Finnegan, as UIC ended the period with a 16-2 run to take a commanding 56-36 lead into the fourth.

Finnegan opened the fourth quarter with a jumper, but a 7-0 run for the visitors followed, pushing UIC's lead to 63-38. Secrist scored Indiana State's next six points with four free throws and a layup in transition, but Indiana State never got closer than 21 for the remainder of the game following a pair of free throws from Savannah White and another layup from Secrist. Indiana State's offensive struggles continued, as the Sycamores went scoreless for the last three minutes in a 76-48 setback.
