Glanton’s double-double, White’s record setting night power Sycamores past Salukis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Mya Glanton recorded her fifth double-double of the season Friday night while Savannah White tied the Indiana State single-game record with seven blocks, helping Indiana State squeak past Southern Illinois 64-63 inside Banterra Center.

Glanton led the Sycamores with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Bella Finnegan had 11 and Ella Sawyer added 10. Eight different players scored for the Sycamores, who led by as many as 22 in the third quarter.

After a slow start, Indiana State used a 17-4 run to take a double-digit lead after the first quarter and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Glanton had 15 first-half points, including 11 in the opening quarter, as a strong shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes allowed the Trees to take a 38-22 lead into the intermission. The Sycamores maintained their double-digit advantage until the fourth quarter, as SIU took advantage of 17 second-half turnovers to get within one late. A deep two-pointer from the corner from White inside the last 30 seconds proved to be a dagger, allowing Indiana State to hold off Southern Illinois' comeback effort.

First Half
Indiana State's offense ran through Glanton in the early stages of the game, as the veteran post player scored the Sycamores' first two baskets. Asia Donald added a 3-pointer coming out of the media timeout to put Indiana State ahead 9-7, and the Sycamores never trailed for the remainder of the game. A pair of layups from Glanton sandwiched around a 3-pointer from Finnegan paced the Trees on a 17-4 run to close the opening quarter, as Indiana State took a 23-11 lead into the second.

Finnegan and Glanton opened the second quarter with consecutive baskets, as Indiana State continued to build on its early advantage. Sawyer added a pair of layup as the Sycamore lead extended to 31-15 midway through the period, and late layups from Glanton, Chelsea Cain and Kiley Bess further extended Indiana State's lead. Southern Illinois got a layup just before the buzzer, but the Sycamores went into the locker room with a 38-22 lead.

Second Half
Indiana State continued its strong start into the early stages of the third quarter, as 3-pointers from Bess and Finnegan gave the Sycamores their largest lead of the game at 46-24. SIU went on an 11-2 run to cut Indiana State's lead in half, but another 3-pointer from Finnegan pushed the Sycamore advantage back up to 51-35 with four minutes left. Southern Illinois closed the quarter with another strong scoring run, but Indiana State maintained a 55-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Deja Jones connected on a pair of midrange baskets to maintain Indiana State's double-digit lead early in the fourth, but Southern Illinois took advantage of turnovers from the Sycamores to get back in the game. A layup from Bess made it 61-53 in favor of the Trees, but a 7-0 Saluki run, all coming off Indiana State turnovers, saw the Sycamores' lead whittled down to a point inside the last minute. White hit a clutch two-pointer from the corner inside the final 30 seconds and Sawyer split a pair of free throws that proved to be the difference, as Indiana State snapped its 12-game losing streak to Southern Illinois with a 64-63 win.

News and Notes
  • Friday's win was Indiana State's first win over Southern Illinois since Jan. 6, 2019. Each of the Sycamores' last three wins in the series, including Friday, have come in Carbondale.
  • Indiana State's 10 blocks tied the program single-game record, which was last matched against Northern Kentucky on Dec. 16, 2019.
  • Savannah White's seven blocks tied the Indiana State single-game record, which was originally set by the program's all-time blocks leader, Shannon Thomas, on March 4, 2010 at Drake. White's seven blocks are the most by an MVC athlete in a game this season and ranks in the top 10 single-game block totals in Division I this season.
  • Indiana State's 3-point defense continues to be among the best in the conference, as Southern Illinois was just 2-for-13 from distance (15.4 percent). The Salukis did not make a 3-pointer until the fourth quarter.
  • Indiana State didn't take many 3-pointers Friday, but the Sycamores made the most of their opportunities from behind the arc. The Trees were 5-for-7 from 3-point range in the win over Southern Illinois.
  • The Sycamores shot better than 40 percent from the field for the third time in the last four games, connecting on 41.1 percent of their shots (23-for-56).
