TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Mya Glanton pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds and added 11 points Thursday night, but a slow start proved costly for Indiana State in a 75-63 loss to Murray State inside Hulman Center.
Glanton's double-double was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Bella Finnegan added 13 points while
Asia Donald scored 12 off the bench.
Indiana State found itself down 26-9 after the opening quarter, but slowly worked its way back into the game. The Sycamores outscored Murray State 14-9 in the second quarter thanks in large part to five points from Finnegan and four from Donald, then cut their deficit down to 10 after three quarters following a buzzer-beating shot from
Deja Jones. Three-point plays from Glanton and Donald got the Trees within single-digits and free throws from
Kiley Bess and
Savannah White pulled Indiana State within five, but an 8-0 Murray State run put the game out of reach.
First Half
Glanton got on the board early for the Sycamores with a jumper, and
Chelsea Cain hit a layup in transition to give the Trees a 5-4 lead less than 90 seconds in. Murray State followed with an 11-0 run and never trailed from that point on. Indiana State got baskets from Glanton and
Keslyn Secrist late, but Murray State used a high-octane opening 10 minutes to take a 26-9 lead after the opening quarter.
Secrist and Finnegan opened the second quarter with 3-pointers to cut Indiana State's deficit down to 28-15, with the latter adding a layup to whittle the deficit down to 11. Murray State answered with a 7-2 run of its own to extend its lead to 35-19, with White scoring the only basket for the Sycamores in that span. Donald gave Indiana State a spark off the bench with four late points, but the Sycamores went into the locker room facing a 35-23 deficit.
Second Half
Murray State scored the first four points of the third quarter, but Indiana State answered with baskets from Cain and Finnegan. The Sycamores got within 10 following a three-ball from Finnegan and a layup from
Chloe Williams, but Murray State always had an answer on offense and pushed its lead back out to 15. Baskets from Glanton and Bess cut into the deficit late, and Jones hit a floater at the third quarter buzzer to pull the Sycamores within 10, 51-41, heading into the fourth quarter.
Indiana State got off to a strong start in the fourth quarter, with Donald connecting on a pair of free throws and Glanton hitting a pair of layups, the latter one being part of a three-point play, to cut the Sycamores' deficit to 57-48 less than two minutes into the quarter. A three-point play from Donald and a trey from Jones that banked in from the wing further cut Murray State's lead to 61-54 midway through. Bess and White both went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to get Indiana State within five at 63-58 heading into the final media timeout, but that was the closest the Sycamores got. Murray State went on an 8-0 run and, despite a late 3-pointer from Finnegan and a layup from Bess, escaped Hulman Center with a 75-63 win over the Sycamores.
