TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State and Illinois State renew a longtime rivalry Friday afternoon when the Sycamores face the Redbirds for the Coughlan-Malloy Cup inside the Indoor Track and Field Facility.
Friday's proceedings will kick off at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
Six meet and two facility records fell at the Indoor Track and Field Facility, as Indiana State opened its 2023-24 indoor season in style at the
John Gartland Invitational.
The Sycamores earned first-place finishes on both the men's and women's side, claiming the top spot in 20 events on day.
Terrance O'Bannon (60m) and
Luigi Rivas (60m hurdles) set facility records, while O'Bannon, Rivas,
Claire Pittman (long jump),
Will Staggs (pole vault),
Wyatt Puff (shot put) and
Shomari Rogers-Walton (triple jump) all set meet records for the Sycamores.
As a team, Indiana State finished with 231 points on the men's side and 200 points on the women's side. The Sycamore men were 112 points ahead of second-place UIndy, while the women were 108 points ahead of second-place SIU Edwardsville.
About the Meet
Longtime Missouri Valley Conference rivals Indiana State and Illinois State meet Friday afternoon for the 19th Annual Coughlan/Malloy Cup. The dual meet event, which is named after longtime coaches John Coughlan (Illinois State) and Bill Malloy (Indiana State), has taken place every year since 2005, with the exception of the 2020-21 season.
Indiana State won 12 of the 18 previous editions of the cup, though Illinois State has won the last five. The Redbirds won 160-139 last year in Normal and won the last meeting in Terre Haute 153-147.
Clean Sweep
Following a strong start to the 2023-24 season at the
John Gartland Invitational, Indiana State swept the MVC's Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors with
Terrance O'Bannon,
Will Staggs,
Rachel Mehringer and
Niesha Anderson earning the weekly honors.
O'Bannon was named the MVC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, Staggs was named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Mehringer was named the MVC Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Anderson was named the MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
The weekly awards are the first for Indiana State this season and the first career weekly honors for O'Bannon, Mehringer and Anderson. Staggs previously earned MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors during the 2022-23 indoor season. Indiana State also became the first MVC school to sweep all four weekly honors since the Illinois State did so in the first week of the 2021-22 season.
Trees At The Top
Entering Friday's meet, Indiana State has 10 marks that are ranked first in the MVC, the most among any school in the conference.
Seven of those top marks come on the men's side, with three coming on the women's side. Of Indiana State's top marks, six come in field events, while four come on the track.

The Forest Runs Deep
Indiana State's throws group played an instrumental role in the Sycamores' success last season and is already off to a strong start to begin the 2023-24 campaign.
Entering Friday's meet, Indiana State has multiple top-five conference marks in three of the four throws events. On the men's side,
Noah Bolt owns top-five marks in both the shot put (fourth) and weight throw (third), while
Wyatt Puff (shot put, first) and
Elias Foor (weight throw, fourth) both rank in the top five in their respective throws events.
Niesha Anderson also owns a pair of top-three marks on the women's side, ranking first in the weight throw and second in the shot put. In addition,
Hannah Redlin ranks third in the MVC in the shot put.
Record Setter
A year after running the fastest 60m time for a freshman in program history,
Terrance O'Bannon's sophomore season already started with a bang.
O'Bannon broke meet and facility records in the season-opening
John Gartland Invitational with his 60m time of 6.69, earning MVC Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors and also earning Indiana State's Athlete of the Week honors for his performance.
O'Bannon leads a strong short sprints group for Indiana State that owns four of the top eight 60m marks in the MVC.
