Last Time Out
Indiana State gave preseason conference favorite Northern Iowa everything it could handle Saturday afternoon, but the Panthers outlasted the Sycamores 85-79 in a high-scoring battle inside McLeod Center.
Chelsea Cain led the way for the Sycamores with 18 points and six assists, while
Mya Glanton tied her season high of 17 points and added six rebounds.
Bella Finnegan was also in double-figures for the Trees with 11, while
Ella Sawyer had seven points matched her career high of eight assists.
Indiana State opened the game on a 7-0 run and shot 60 percent from the field in the opening quarter. The Sycamores were efficient from distance in the opening 20 minutes, where they were 7-for-10 from behind the arc. Northern Iowa kept pace, though, and took a two-point lead into halftime. The Sycamores were neck-and-neck throughout the second half, but the home side took advantage of 26 free throw attempts in the second half to narrowly defeat a scrappy Sycamore team.
Home Sweet Home
Indiana State returns to the confines of Hulman Center for the first time in more than a month Thursday when it faces Murray State. The Sycamores have played their last five games on the road, while nine of Indiana State's last 10 games have come away from home.
Indiana State's three home games thus far are tied for the second-fewest in the conference at this stage, with only Valparaiso (two) and UIC (three) playing three or fewer home games at this point of the season.
Letting It Fly
Indiana State 3-point shooting woes have been well-documented this season, but the Sycamores found plenty of success from behind the arc in their last game at Northern Iowa. The Trees knocked down 10 treys against the Panthers, tying a season high, while shooting a season-best 52.6 percent from distance.
Seven different Sycamores knocked down at least one 3-pointer against UNI, with
Asia Donald (two) and
Bella Finnegan (three) both connecting from distance on multiple occasions.
Balancing Act
Indiana State's scoring has been a balanced effort this season, with four different Sycamores averaging double-digit points per game.
Chelsea Cain leads the Trees with 11.5 points per game, while
Kiley Bess (11.1),
Bella Finnegan (10.1) and
Mya Glanton (10.0) also average at least 10 points per game. Additionally,
Asia Donald,
Ella Sawyer,
Keslyn Secrist and
Chloe Williams have all produced double-digit scoring games this season for the Sycamores.
The balanced offense for the Sycamores has made it difficult for teams to key in on any specific player. No player has led Indiana State in scoring in consecutive games this season.
