CHARLESTON, Ill. – Indiana State battled to its fourth draw of the 2023 season as
Maddie Helling's first collegiate goal propelled the Sycamores to a 1-1 result at Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Stadium.
The Sycamores (0-0-4) remain undefeated on the season as Indiana State put together arguably their most complete offensive effort to date with 15 shots with six on target in the nonconference matchup. Helling put two on net, including the first goal of her ISU career in the match to pace the Sycamore offense.
Brooklyn Woods added three shots on free kicks in the match as ISU battled back after surrendering an early goal to the Panthers (1-2-1).
Eastern Illinois took the early lead in the 10th minute of the match as Serra Pizano connected on a shot from inside the box, slipping it into the lower left corner of the net past a diving
Maddie Alexander to give EIU the 1-0 advantage.
The Sycamores fought their way back into the match in the first half with both Woods,
Mackenzie Kent, and
Ella Gorrie all firing shots at the net looking for the equalizer.
ISU finally struck in the 33rd minute as
Alexa Mackey collected a free ball and took it up the right sideline. Her cross into the box deflected off Helling and split the defenders in front of the net. Helling beat EIU keeper Lexi Prusow to the ball and chipped it into the goal from five yards out to even the match at 1-1.
The Sycamores pressured the Panthers late in the half with
Sasha Thompson firing a shot from the top of the box late, but Prusow proved up to the task to keep the match tied at 1-1 at the break.
Indiana State out-shot EIU 9-0 over the final 45 minutes and continually pressured the Panthers defense in the second half. Kent nearly put the Sycamores in the lead in the 53rd minute, but her shot clanged off the crossbar and back into play. Woods also had a shot hit off the crossbar in the 75th minute as EIU held off the Sycamores to keep the tie intact.
ISU posted a season-high 15 shots in the match and forced 14 EIU fouls in the contest. The Sycamores held nearly 73 percent of their possession in Panther territory in the tie.
