Murray State jumps ahead early to take series opener over Sycamores

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Murray State offense homered four times and the Racers took control of the game early on Friday night as Indiana State fell in the series opener at Bob Warn Field, 12-4.

The Sycamores (33-14, 19-3 MVC) lost at Bob Warn Field for just the third time in the 2023 season as Friday's defeat snapped a 13-game home winning streak dating back to mid-March. Murray State (27-23, 12-10 MVC) picked up the series opening win to remain in the hunt for a top-four seed at the MVC Championships.

Parker Stinson provided some early excitement for the Sycamores with a solo home run off the trees in center field and Mike Sears and Luis Hernandez both drove in runs for the ISU offense in the loss. However, Murray State scored 10 runs from the second to the sixth innings and added two more in the eighth to offset any Sycamore rally.

Matt Jachec (5-3) took the loss on Friday night. The redshirt junior surrendered a season-high 10 hits and seven runs over 4.0 innings while striking out four. Jacob Pruitt, Cole Gilley, and Kyle Cortner went the rest of the way for the Sycamores to close out the contest.

Adam Pottinger and Josue Urdaneta led ISU with a pair of two-hit days as the Sycamores connected on eight hits on Friday night. Urdaneta drilled his first triple of the season to provide the second of the two ISU extra base hits in the loss.

Matt Boynton (4-2) received the win on Friday night for the Racers as the right-hander allowed three hits and an unearned run in a 4.0-inning relief effort. Jacob Pennington went the first four innings allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) while walking three and striking out four. Nathan Holler went the ninth to close out the game.

Murray State's offense combined for 16 hits in the game paced by Taylor Howell's four-hit day. Logan Bland, Dustin Mercer, Drew Vogel, and Seth Gardner all homered in the win.

How They Scored
  • Murray State opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on Taylor Howell's RBI single up the middle scoring Carson Garner.
  • The Sycamores evened the score in the bottom of the frame on Parker Stinson's solo home run off the trees beyond the center field wall to make it a 1-1 game.
  • Logan Bland and Drew Vogel both homered for the Racers in the top of the third to make it a 3-1 Murray State lead.
  • Bland added a two-run single in the top of the fourth to put MSU ahead 5-1.
  • Mike Sears put the Sycamores back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to right center scoring Josue Urdaneta to make it a 5-2 game.
  • Brennan McCullough scored on a wild pitch and Vogel scored on a sacrifice fly to put MSU ahead 7-2 after the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Sycamores added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead down to 7-4 as Seth Gergely scored on Luis Hernandez's sacrifice fly, while Randal Diaz crossed the plate on a passed ball.
  • Murray State added three runs in the top of the sixth with Seth Gardner and Dustin Mercer connecting on solo home runs in the frame to highlight the 10-4 lead.
  • MSU's final two runs came across in the top of the eighth on Vogel's RBI double down the right field line and Garner's sacrifice fly to right scoring McCullough.
  • The Sycamores scored their final run of the contest in the bottom of the ninth on an errant throw off a fielder's choice allowing Grant Magill to touch the plate and provide the final 12-5 margin.
News & Notes
  • The Sycamores dropped their MVC series opener for the third time in the 2023 season on Friday night. All three of ISU's losses have come in the opening game of the series (at UIC, at Evansville, vs. Murray State).
  • Parker Stinson homered for the third time this season and first since he went deep against Michigan State back on March 19.
  • Josue Urdaneta connected on ISU's fifth triple of 2023 and first since Parker Stinson went for three bases back on March 7 at SEMO.
  • Adam Pottinger ran his on-base streak to 23 consecutive games on Friday night as the junior outfielder went 2-for-5 from the plate. His on-base streak equals ISU's second longest of the 2023 season matching Mike Sears' 23-game streak earlier this season from February 25 – April 7.
  • Seth Gergely and Josue Urdaneta both extended their on-base streaks to 15 games on Friday night.
