EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State softball got back in the win column on Tuesday night, defeating Evansville, 6-1, at Cooper Stadium to win the season series two games to one over the Aces.
The Sycamores (24-23, 12-9 MVC) racked up nine hits including four for extra-bases. The Purple Aces (21-26, 7-14 MVC) were held to just four hits by the duo of
Lauren Sackett and
Cassi Newbanks.
Indiana State now has a 55-50 lead in the all-time series against Evansville.
The Action
Olivia Patton led off the game with an infield single and then promptly stole second base for her team-leading eighth steal of the season. She would be stranded on second after a strikeout and a pair of flyouts. In the bottom of the first,
Lauren Sackett picked up two strikeouts while navigating around bases-load jam. The inning would end on a diving stop by
Olivia Patton in center field.
In the top of the second,
TeAnn Bringle doubled to right center, her 10
th double of the year, to highlight the Sycamore offense in the frame.
Lauren Sackett would pick up her third strikeout in a scoreless bottom of the second.
The Sycamores got their offense rolling in the third, starting off the inning with singles from
Abi Chipps and
Olivia Patton.
Danielle Henning moved Chipps and Patton to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Following the sac bunt,
Isabella Henning launched her team-best sixth home run of the year, a three-run shot to left center to put ISU up 3-0.
TeAnn Bringle added to the Sycamore lead her with second double of the game, a line drive down the left field line to score
Hannah Welch who was on to pinch run for
Annie Tokarek who singled earlier in the frame. Sackett would pick up another strikeout along the way to another scoreless frame in the bottom half.
After sitting down the Sycamores in order to start the fourth, Evansville would make things interesting in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff solo shot to right center put the Purple Aces on the scoreboard, making it a 4-1 game. Evansville would then load the bases and chase Sackett with two outs.
Cassi Newbanks entered in relief and got a groundout to escape the jam.
In the top of the sixth,
Kaylee Barrett launched a solo shot to left field, her third of the season, to put Indiana State up 5-1.
Cassi Newbanks worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.
Cassie Thomerson extended the Sycamore lead in the seventh, lining a single to right field score to
Morgan Goodrich, making it a 6-1 contest heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Cassi Newbanks once again sat the Aces down in order, closing out the Indiana State victory.
Olivia Patton and
TeAnn Bringle finished the day 2-for-4 while
Isabella Henning,
Cassie Thomerson,
Kaylee Barrett and
Abi Chipps each recorded one hit apiece.
Lauren Sackett finished with five strikeouts in her 3.2 innings of work.
Cassi Newbanks went 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
