Gergely homers twice, Jachec brilliant as Sycamores top Valparaiso, 10-1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.Seth Gergely homered twice and Matt Jachec went eight strong innings as Indiana State opened up Missouri Valley play with a 10-1 win over Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field.
 
The Sycamores (9-11, 1-0 MVC) scored runs in each of the first six innings highlighted by Gergely's pair of two-run home runs in the second and fourth innings. Mike Sears and Randal Diaz also homered for the Sycamores as ISU opened conference play with a season-high 15 hits in the contest.
 
Jachec (2-2) nearly went the distance against Valparaiso (7-8, 0-1 MVC) to open Valley play on Saturday. The right-hander retired nine batters in a row from the third to the sixth innings and posted eight strikeouts in the win. Jachec didn't allow a runner in scoring position until a one-out double in the top of the sixth frame and pitched out of trouble in the seventh and eighth frames in his second consecutive quality start.
 
Gergely tied career-highs with three hits, three runs scored and added a career-high six RBI in the first multi-home run game of his ISU career. The redshirt senior centerfielder added his team-leading seventh stolen base of the season in the bottom of the first inning to highlight his day.
 
Sears added his team-leading fifth home run and Diaz his third as ISU connected on a season-best four home runs in the win. Luis Hernandez added his team-leading sixth double of the year for the Sycamore offense.
 
Jachec was efficient in utilizing just 92 pitches to cruise through eight innings. The redshirt junior allowed four hits and one run while striking out eight before turning the ball over to Kyle Cortner in the ninth. Cortner hurled a scoreless ninth getting the game-ending double play to end the contest.
 
Brady Renfro and Alex Ryan both doubled for the Beacons on Saturday afternoon to highlight Valparaiso's offense on the day.
 
Jacob Rosenkranz (2-2) took the loss after going the first four innings allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out four. Christian Hack went the final four on the mound allowing five hits and two runs while adding four strikeouts.
 
How They Scored
  • Mike Sears opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single up the middle scoring Seth Gergely to put the Sycamores ahead 1-0.
  • ISU added to the lead in the bottom of the second as Seth Gergely connected on a three-run home run to right field scoring Josue Urdaneta and Grant Magill to make it a 4-0 game.
  • Mike Sears added to the Sycamore lead in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left field making the score 5-0.
  • Gergely added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as the redshirt senior connected on his second three-run shot of the game driving in Urdaneta and Magill to make it an 8-0 game.
  • Magill made it 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to left center scoring Luis Hernandez.
  • The ISU lead hit 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth on Randal Diaz's solo home run to the left of the left field line foul pole.
  • Valparaiso scored the final run of the contest as Brady Renfro scored on a Sycamore error in the field to put the final margin at 10-1.

News & Notes
  • Seth Gergely became the first ISU player this season to hit two home runs in a single game.
  • Gergely became the first Sycamore with a multi-home run game since Aaron Beck hit two home runs last season at home against Evansville on April 24, 2022.
  • Gergely's six RBI were the most by a Sycamore player since Max Wright drove in six runs against Evansville back on May 22, 2021.
  • Gergely tied career-highs in hits (sixth time) and runs scored (second time) on Saturday afternoon.
  • Matt Jachec went 22.1 innings on the mound before allowing his first career run against Valparaiso.
  • Jachec posted his second consecutive quality start after going the distance back on March 10, 2023, in a 5-1 win at Memphis.
  • Jachec lowered his ERA to 3.21 on the season and moved to a 36:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season.
