TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State softball opened Missouri Valley Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Price Field, winning their home opener 13-0 over the UIC Flames.
The Sycamores (11-11) used a seven-run first inning en route to a five-inning run-rule win over UIC (0-22) who played In their first ever MVC game on Sunday.
Danielle Henning led the ISU offense, finishing 3-for-3 on the day with a career-high five RBIs. Henning had three of those RBIs in the first inning where she had a doube and a single. She drove in two more in the third inning where the Sycamores scored four runs to go up 11-0.
ISU scored two more in the fourth as
TeAnn Bringle scored on an error and
Randi Jo Pryor drove in
Cassie Thomerson with an infield single to make it a 13-0 game.
Indiana State finished with nine hits and also drew seven walks on the afternoon.
Annie Tokarek,
Kennedy Shade and Thomerson each had a hit and an RBI as well.
Lexi Benko went the distance in the circle for the Trees, allowing just one hit and striking out five to improve to 5-3 on the season.
The series continues on Monday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET at Price Field.
