TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Michigan State jumped ahead early in both Sunday afternoon games on their way to taking the doubleheader at Bob Warn Field by scores of 8-2 and 10-7.
The Spartans (10-8) utilized a three-run first inning to take the first game and MSU held off a late Indiana State (8-10) rally in the second game to secure the pair of wins in the non-conference matchup.
Parker Stinson,
Keegan Watson,
Adam Pottinger, and
Miguel Rivera all homered for the Sycamores in the pair of losses, while
Jared Spencer set a new career-high with seven strikeouts in a relief outing to highlight ISU's efforts on Sunday.
Game One: Michigan State 8, Indiana State 2
Michigan State took advantage of early Indiana State wildness on the mound as the Spartans took the 8-2 win in the opener at Bob Warn Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans sent all nine batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored three runs on their way to taking the early lead. Michigan State would add runs in the second, sixth, and seventh innings before Dillon Kark's two-run home run in the top of the eighth sealed the MSU win.
Parker Stinson and
Keegan Watson connected on back-to-back home runs for Indiana State as the Sycamores struggled to get the offense going in the series opener.
Seth Gergely had two of ISU's six hits of the day and added a double in the loss.
Connor Fenlong (1-2) took the loss after going 3.0 innings allowing five hits, four runs, and four walks while striking out two.
Zach Davidson was effective over 4.0 innings of relieve scattering eight hits while striking out six, while
Aaron Moss and
Kyle Cortner closed out the game on the mound.
Jack Frank paced Michigan State in the opener with a three-hit, three-RBI effort at the plate. Mitch Jebb added three hits, while Sam Busch tripled and Kark homered for the Spartans.
Nolan Higgins (2-1) went 2.2 innings in relief in picking up the win for MSU. Joseph Dzierwa went the first 3.2 innings allowing one hit while striking out eight. Andrew Carson went the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
How They Scored
- Michigan State took the 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Sam Busch brought home Trent Farquhar on an RBI groundout, while Jack Frank connected on a two-run single put the Spartans ahead early.
- The lead hit 4-0 in the top of the second as MSU's Bryan Broecker singled home Brock Vradenburg to add to the margin.
- Michigan State added another run in the top of the sixth as Frank singled home Busch.
- Parker Stinson and Keegan Watson connected on back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull Indiana State back within 6-2.
- MSU added the final runs of the game on Dillon Kark's two-run shot to left field in the top of the eighth inning.
Game Two: Michigan State 10, Indiana State 7
Michigan State jumped out to a four-run lead early and held off a late Indiana State comeback as the Spartans took both ends of the doubleheader on Sunday evening at Bob Warn Field.
Trailing 8-3 in the sixth, the Sycamores mounted a comeback off the power bats of
Adam Pottinger and
Miguel Rivera. Pottinger connected on a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth to make it a three-run game. Rivera followed up in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run blast to the right of the scoreboard in right centerfield to bring the margin down to 8-7.
That was as close as Indiana State was able to make it as Brock Vradenburg connected on a two-run single in the top of the ninth to provide insurance for the visiting Spartans and Wyatt Rush (S, 3) closed out the contest in the bottom half of the frame to secure the Michigan State win.
Keegan Watson posted two of Indiana State's seven hits in the game and scored a pair of runs to lead the ISU offense.
Seth Gergely doubled, while Pottinger and Rivera homered to highlight ISU's day at the plate.
Simon Gregersen (1-1) took the loss on the mound allowing seven hits and six runs (five earned) over 3.1 innings.
Cam Edmonson,
Luke Patzner, and
Jared Spencer all closed out the game in relief with Spencer striking out a season-high seven over the final three innings.
Frank and Vradenburgh both had three-RBI contests for Michigan State while six players posted multi-hit games in the win. Trent Farquahar and Mitch Jebb both doubled for the Spartans.
Harrison Cook (1-1) picked up the win in 4.2 innings of relief work. Rush worked the final 1.1 innings in earning his third save of the year.

- Michigan State took the 4-0 lead in the top of the first highlighted by Jack Frank's two-run home run to right field to jump ahead early.
- The Sycamores nearly tied it in the bottom of the frame as ISU sent nine players to the plate with Keegan Watson (RBI single), Seth Gergely (RBI HBP), and Alex Marx (RBI single) all driving in runs to cut the lead down to 4-3.
- Michigan State increased the lead with runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings highlighted by Jake Dresselhouse's RBI single in the fourth, while Casey Mayes scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it an 8-3 Spartan lead.
- Adam Pottinger cut it down to an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to right field scoring Watson.
- Miguel Rivera narrowed the gap down to 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run shot scoring Seth Gergely.
- Brock Vradenburg provided the final margin with a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to give Michigan State the final 10-7 advantage.
