MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Indiana State softball split a pair of games on Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex, defeating Pitt but falling to North Alabama to wrap up their weekend at the Tiger Classic.
Both low scoring affairs, ISU won 3-0 over Pitt while losing 3-0 to North Alabama.
The Sycamores (8-11) finish the weekend 1-4, losing to North Alabama twice, Pitt and host Memphis while also defeating Pittsburgh to round out their five games in Tennessee.
Game One
TeAnn Bringle put the Trees out in front in the bottom of the second with an RBI double that scored
Kaylee Barrett. Bringle would score on the play as well, advancing to third on the throw and scoring on a Panther error to put ISU ahead 2-0.
Isabella Henning homered over the wall in centerfield, her third of the season, to put the Sycamores up 3-0 after three innings.
Cassi Newbanks started for Indiana State, throwing 5.1 shutout innings before being replaced by
Lauren Sackett. Newbanks allowed just two hits and struck out a pair. Sackett helped ISU escape a bases loaded jam in the sixth and closed out the Panthers in the seventh, earning her second save of the season. She struck out three batters in her 1.2 innings of work.
Henning and
Kennedy Shade both went 2-for-3 at the plate with
TeAnn Bringle going 1-for-3 to highlight the Sycamore offense. Pittsburgh had just three hits.
Newbanks improves to 2-3 on the season with the win.
Game Two
After two scoreless innings, North Alabama scored on a Sycamore error in the third inning which would end up being the winning run.
The Lions added two runs in the seventh inning to win 3-0.
The Sycamores collected six hits, getting a 2-for-3 effort from
Isabella Henning as well as hits from
Kennedy Shade,
Olivia Patton,
Cassie Thomerson and
Kaylee Barrett.
Indiana State starter
Lexi Benko went three innings, allowing one run on five hits.
Hailey Griffin came on in relief and threw four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out two. Benko got the loss and drops to 2-2 on the year.
Isabella Henning and
Kennedy Shade both extended their hitting streaks to six games with Shade finishing the weekend with six hits while Henning had 12. Henning now has a team-high 27 hits on the season.

Indiana State will travel to Indianapolis on Tuesday for a doubleheader at IUPUI set to begin at 1 p.m. ET before opening MVC play at home with a three-game series against UIC beginning on Friday, March 17.
