Sycamores clinch series win behind Diaz home run, Davidson and Patzner pitching performances

MEMPHIS, Tenn.Randal Diaz homered in support of Zach Davidson and Luke Patzner's strong pitching performances as Indiana State held off Memphis on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field, 7-3.
 
Diaz broke the game open in the top of the second inning as the sophomore shortstop connected on a go-ahead three-run home run over the left field wall plating Adam Pottinger and Grant Magill to give ISU (6-8) a 4-1 lead. Magill added three hits including an RBI single in the third, while Seth Gergely drove in a pair of runs as the Sycamores clinched the series win over Memphis (8-7).
 
Zach Davidson (2-1) was effective over 2.1 innings of relief work. The junior left-hander scattered three singles and allowed one run while striking out two in his second win of the season. Luke Patzner (S, 1) went the final 4.2 innings in hitless relief allowing just two walks while striking out four in his first save of the year. Brennyn Cutts went the first two innings on the mound in the no-decision.
 
Parker Stinson and Keegan Watson both doubled in the Sycamores win, while Mike Sears drew a pair of walks as ISU clinched its first series win of 2023.
 
Anthony Hansen and Tyler Heckert combined for four of Memphis' five hits in the game with Hansen driving in a pair of runs in the loss. Will Spears added his first RBI of the series on Saturday afternoon.
 
JT Durham (1-1) took the loss on the mound as the left-hander went 2.2 innings allowing five hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out two. Jake Curtis added 3.1 innings in relief, while David Warren and Jackson Lyons closed out the game on the mound.
 
How They Scored
  • Memphis took the opening lead of the game in the bottom of the first as Cameron Benson scored on Anthony Hansen's RBI grounder to put the Tigers ahead 1-0.
  • The Sycamores responded in the top of the second with Adam Pottinger driving in Seth Gergely with an RBI single, while Randal Diaz drilled a three-run home run to left field scoring Grant Magill and Pottinger to put ISU ahead 4-1.
  • Will Spears took one back for Memphis in the bottom of the second with his RBI single driving in Tyler Heckert to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
  • The Sycamores added two more runs in the top of the third with Parker Stinson scoring on Seth Gergely's RBI groundout and Keegan Watson scored on Grant Magill's infield single to put ISU ahead 6-2.
  • Gergely added Indiana State's final run of the game with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth scoring Parker Stinson.
  • Memphis put the final margin at 7-3 following Hansen's RBI single up the middle scoring Brayland Skinner.
News & Notes
  • Randal Diaz became the second Indiana State player to post multiple home runs on the season following his three-run shot in the second inning. Diaz (2) and Mike Sears (4) have combined for six of the Sycamores' 12 home runs in 2023.
  • Zach Davidson became the first ISU pitcher to record multiple wins on the year following his 2.1-inning relief stint.
  • Luke Patzner made his longest appearance of the 2023 season as the redshirt junior went 4.2 innings in relief. He also became the second ISU pitcher to record a save on the year.
  • Randal Diaz recorded his second three-RBI game of the week after his second three-run home run in the last four days.
  • Grant Magill recorded his second multi-hit game of the weekend series and is hitting .714 with five RBI over the first two games against Memphis.
  • Zach Davidson recorded pickoffs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings for his first multi-pickoff game of the year.
