Hernandez homers, Holycross strong as Sycamores fall to No. 22 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 22 Miami powered past visiting Indiana State on Wednesday evening at Mark Light Field as the Sycamores fell to the host Hurricanes, 9-3.

Luis Hernandez homered and scored twice to lead Indiana State (2-2) but the Hurricanes (4-1) utilized four home runs, two off the bat of Blake Cyr, to top ISU in the non-conference matchup. Edgardo Villegas and Yohandy Morales also homered for the Hurricanes in the win.

Hernandez sparked the Sycamores early with a solo home run in the top of the first inning and Indiana State had its chances offensively in the contest loading the bases in both the fifth and seventh innings. However the Sycamores were held scoreless in the fifth inning, while Randal Diaz connected on a sacrifice fly in the seventh as the UM pitching staff limited ISU's chances to rally back into the game.

Hernandez posted two of ISU's five hits in the contest, while Parker Stinson, Seth Gergely, and Henry Brown added singles in the loss. Grant Magill scored a run to add to his totals on the year.

Indiana State utilized eight pitchers in the contest with Brennyn Cutts (0-1) drawing the start on the mound. The sophomore right-hander went the first 2.1 innings allowing two hits and three runs while striking out three. Cameron Holycross was effective in relief going a career-best 3.0 innings while allowing one run and striking out three in a strong outing.

Villegas, Morales, and Cyr posted multi-hit games for the Hurricanes as Miami posted eight extra-base hits in the game. CJ Kayfus added a triple, while Zach Levenson doubled to highlight the UM attack.

Ben Chestnutt (1-0) took the win on the mound for Miami after going the first 5.0 innings. The right-hander allowed two hits and one run while striking out seven in the win. Five UM relievers closed out the game with the Miami pitching staff combining for 16 strikeouts in the game.
