TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men's basketball's
Robbie Avila was named this week's Mark Clinkenbeard Construction ISU Student-Athlete of the Week as announced by the athletic department on Monday afternoon.
Avila posted his first double-double of the 2023-24 season this past week against Tennessee State as the sophomore center helped the Sycamores surge past the visiting Tigers in the final home nonconference matchup of the calendar year. Avila scored 18 points and added a career-high 14 rebounds in the 90-69 win over TSU.
Avila was quiet in the scoring category in the first half, but shone in the passing game and on the defensive side with a trio of early assists and two blocked shots as the Sycamores built a four-point lead at the break.
He helped ISU seize control in the second half as the big man hit a pair of early three-pointers to keep the game within range, before helping the Sycamores close out the contest late against Tennessee State. Avila's three-pointer in the final minute helped the Sycamores hit the 90-point mark for the seventh time in the 2023-24 season and third in the last four games.
He finished the contest 6-of-10 from the floor, 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, while adding five assists.
The Mark Clinkenbeard Construction ISU Student-Athlete of the Week will be announced every Monday afternoon throughout the 2023-24 athletic season.
