Stout defense propels Sycamores past Redhawks

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Mya Glanton led a quartet of Indiana State players in double-figures with 20 points Sunday afternoon, leading the Sycamores to a 65-57 win over Southeast Missouri State inside Hulman Center.

Kiley Bess added 16 for the Blue and White, while Asia Donald came off the bench to score 13 for the Sycamores. Chelsea Cain finished with 11 points for the Sycamores, who led by as many as 18 in the game. Glanton, Cain and Bella Finnegan grabbed five rebounds each, while Cain also dished out five assists.

Indiana State shot the ball well across the game, opening up a double-digit lead in the first quarter thanks to a strong paint presence. The Sycamore offense clicked in the third quarter, with Glanton exploiting SEMO's zone on multiple occasions for easy baskets down low. Indiana State built its lead to as many as 18 following three straight layups from Glanton, but the visiting Redhawks battled back. SEMO cut it to a two-possession game late, but Indiana State's defense held strong and the Sycamores sealed out their second straight win from the line.

First Half
Glanton and Finnegan opened the scoring for the Sycamores with baskets down low, as Indiana State established an early paint presence. Indiana State's first five baskets were all in the paint, as Cain got to work early with nine points in the opening quarter. A 3-pointer from Cain gave Indiana State a 15-12 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, and the Sycamores led for the remainder of the contest. A 7-0 Sycamore run courtesy of Donald and Savannah White pushed the Trees' advantage to 24-14 late, and Indiana State took a 24-16 lead into the second.

Donald scored Indiana State's first five points of the second quarter, and a layup from Bess saw the Trees' lead extended to 31-18 near the midway point of the quarter. SEMO cut Indiana State's lead down to six, but a layup from Cain later extended the Sycamore advantage back to double-digits with just over two minutes remaining in the half. A 7-0 run for the visitors got the Redhawks within three, but Donald added a pair of free throws to send Indiana State into the locker room ahead 37-32.

Second Half
A three-ball from Bess opened the third quarter for the Sycamores, and the senior sharpshooter added another basket down low to make it 42-35 in favor of the Blue and White midway through. Glanton got things going with four straight baskets for the Sycamores, as Indiana State used a run to go ahead 50-37 with just over two minutes left in the period. The Sycamores went on to take a 52-38 lead into the fourth after outscoring SEMO 15-6 in the third quarter.

Three straight baskets from Glanton helped Indiana State build a 58-40 lead less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, but Southeast Missouri State answered back. The Redhawks went on a 7-1 run before a layup from Bess made it 61-47 inside the four-minute mark. A pair of free throws from Glanton kept the Sycamores ahead by 14, but SEMO battled its way back. The Redhawks rattled off an 8-0 run to get within two possessions at 63-57, but Bess iced the game from the charity stripe inside the final 30 seconds to give the Sycamores their first home win of the season, 65-57.
