Sycamores fall to Drake in final road match of 2023 season

DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana State volleyball closed the road portion of its 2023 schedule Saturday evening, as the Sycamores were defeated by Drake in three sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-10) inside the Knapp Center.

Karinna Gall led the attack for the Sycamores with nine kills and seven digs, while Kira Holland added eight kills and eight digs for the Trees. Holland's eight digs were a team high, with five different Sycamores recording five or more in the match.

Indiana State scored the first point of the match courtesy of a kill from Storm Suhre, and kills from Gall and Ella Scott kept the Sycamores right on pace with the Bulldogs. Consecutive kills from Holland, along with a service ace from Avery Hales, got the Sycamores within two at 12-10, and Holland kept the pressure on with another kill. Drake went on a five-point scoring run to break open the set out of the media timeout, though, and claimed the opening frame 25-14 despite a late kill from Gall.

Drake scored seven of the first eight points to begin the second set, before kills from Holland and Hales got things going for the Blue and White. Gall tacked on a kill midway through, and Macy Lengacher followed with a service ace to get the Sycamores within two at 13-11. Another kill from Gall and another Sycamore service ace started a four-point run for the Trees, as Indiana State managed to cut its deficit to 16-15. Drake went on a run of its own, though, and scored nine of the last 12 points to take the second set 25-18.

The Sycamores scored the first two points of the third set on a Gall kill and a service ace from Scott, but Drake countered with an 8-1 scoring run to take control of the set. Consecutive kills from Hales got the Sycamores within four at 10-6, but a 10-point run for the Bulldogs midway through the set proved to be a difference. Indiana State never got in a rhythm in the back half of the set, as Drake clinched the match by taking the third 25-10.
