Men's Hoops Secures the Sweep in Las Vegas

HENDERSON, Nev. - Indiana State's Isaiah Swope ices the game with a three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining in the game to defeat the Toledo Rockets Friday afternoon, securing the three-game, Thanksgiving break trip. ISU beat Toledo 76-74 to move to 5-1 on the season.

For the fifth time this season, Swope led Indiana State in scoring with 23 points, knocking down five three pointers while playing all 40 minutes. He snagged four steals moving his season total to 16. Jayson Kent used his second double-double of the season of 17 points and 11 rebounds to increase his season field-goal percentage to 65.2%.

Ryan Conwell and Robbie Avila each recorded well-rounded efforts in the win. Conwell tallied 16 points and five rebounds, while Avila finished 11-7-3 with three steals.

Kicking off the game, ISU ripped off nine-straight points, with Kent accounting for seven. Following the under-12 media timeout, the Sycamores and Rockets nearly went basket-for-basket, highlighted by buckets from Swope and Xavier Bledson. Toledo finished the half with on a small surge to knot the game at 40 all at the half.

To open the second half, the first two ISU buckets were converted by Conwell and Avila, followed by six different lead changes where the Rockets found themselves on top.

ISU fought all the way back, surging with a 12-2 run in a five-minute span, capped with Swope's three from the left wing. To ensure there was no chance of a comeback, Kent knocked down two free throws with 14 seconds remaining. Kent's two free throws proved to be key to offset Toledo's last-second three-pointer.

Inside the Numbers
  • Coach Josh Schertz has led ISU to the second-consecutive 5-1 start to the season.
  • The Sycamores converted on 78.9% of free-throw attempts, the highest percentage of the season (15-for-19).
  • Today's 23-point effort from Isaiah Swope is his third 20-plus-point game this year and the second time he's made five triples.
  • Jayson Kent's double-double is his second in 10 days.
  • All five starters played all 20 minutes in the second half. Each of them played 32 minutes or more, which beats the highest average minutes-per-game for a player (Julian Larry entering today averaged 30.4 minutes-per-game).
