Sycamores to host Blackout Cancer Games on January 11 and February 18

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – For the fourth consecutive season, Indiana State men's basketball will host Blackout Cancer games to benefit the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center. The selected games are January 11 against Southern Illinois and February 18 against Illinois State.

"We are so grateful that our Athletics Department is partnering with ISU's Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Center," ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said. "We thank everyone involved and hope Sycamore fans will take advantage of this opportunity to watch great basketball while also donating to cancer research being done by ISU faculty and students on our campus."

The Sycamores will wear special black jerseys with pink striping on each of the two dates. A percentage of the proceeds from the overall ticket sales on January 11 and a portion of the proceeds from the upper-level ticket sales on February 18 will be donated toward the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center. "The Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center has made this commitment—to push the boundaries of cancer research at ISU and transform our university into a premier training center for the next generation of cancer researchers. To achieve this goal, the Center provides state-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure for studying cancer and brings together faculty and investigators focusing on fighting this disease from a variety of disciplines.  But most important of all, the Center provides internationally competitive graduate fellowships to recruit and train the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue cancer research at ISU—students whose work, either here or at a future point in their careers, will help to develop cures for this disease.

Ahmad continued: "Your contributions help provide these Porter Research Fellows with the financial support and facilities to be trained as the next generation of cancer researchers, while working year-round in the laboratory to realize the next advance in early cancer detection methods and cancer therapies."

The Porters encourage everyone to get involved in the continued battle against cancer.

"Please donate today to help the Porter Cancer research center create a cancer-free world," said Rich and Robin Porter. "No more lost family, friends and business colleagues, just a cancer-free world, one goal end cancer!"

The game holds a special place in the heart of ISU Athletic Director Sherard Clinkscales.

"Hosting our Blackout Cancer Game the last four seasons has meant a lot to so many who have been impacted by this at some point in their lives," Clinkscales said. "Cancer does not discriminate. I lost my sister to ovarian cancer 10 years ago when she was 38 years old, and I pray a cure is found. We are proud to play a part in continuing to bring awareness to the ongoing fight while emphasizing the importance of supporting cancer research. I encourage everyone to get their routine checkups and contribute to the research in beating this disease."
