Last Time Out
Indiana State topped the competition at the
John Gartland Invitational as the Sycamores picked up the team wins in both the men's and women's standings following the two-day event at the Indiana State Indoor Track Facility.
The Sycamores men (172) topped the five-team field over Eastern Illinois (138.5), SEMO (135.5), Marian (58), and Vincennes (7) in their first home meet of the 2023 season. The women (188) also picked up the team win over the four-team field topping SEMO (157), Marian (108), and Eastern Illinois (67).
Indiana State combined for 15 event wins and 35 overall top-three finishes in recording the win. The Sycamores added three ISU Indoor Facility records and five
John Gartland Invitational records to their totals over the weekend.
Niesha Anderson (weight throw),
Brooklyn Giertz (pole vault),
Kevin Krutsch (high jump),
Brett Norton (weight throw),
Shomari Rogers-Walton (long jump),
Eva Grace Quinlan (high jump, pentathlon) and
Wyatt Wyman (600m) all set new top-10 marks on the Indiana State all-time performance list.
Top-10 Trees
The USTFCCCA released its first set of indoor track and field regional rankings Monday, and Indiana State found itself ranked in the top 10 in the Great Lakes region on both the men's and women's side. The Sycamore women are currently ranked sixth in the region, with the men ranked eighth.
The women's ranking of sixth is the highest regional ranking for the Sycamores since Jan. 29, 2013. Indiana State earned a top-10 regional ranking on the women's side for the first time since the final 2015 season rankings.
For the Sycamore men, Monday's appearance in the regional top 10 was the 12th consecutive regional top-10 ranking. Indiana State was last outside the top 10 in the region on the men's side in the early stages of the 2021 season.
In addition to the regional rankings, Indiana State also ranks 73rd in the nation on the men's side, the second-best ranking of any MVC squad.
Trees at the Top
Through the first three meets of the season, Indiana State has seven athletes that currently rank first in the MVC in events. Six of the seven top marks for the Sycamores come in field events, including the top spots in the men's and women's high jump.
Six of the seven top marks for the Trees were set at last weekend's
John Gartland Invitational, headlined by
Kevin Krutsch clearing 2.15m (7-00.50) in the high jump. Also setting top conference marks last weekend were
Eva Grace Quinlan (high jump, 1.73m/5-08.00),
Selene Weaver (pole vault, 3.96m/12-11.75),
Shomari Rogers-Walton (long jump, 7.65m/25-01.25),
Cami Farmer (5000m, 18:58.99) and the men's 4x400m relay team of
Cameron Stevens,
Trent Jones,
Wyatt Wyman and
Tahj Johnson (3:18.37).
Kelsey Bowlds (high jump, 1.73m/5-08.00) and
William Staggs (pole vault, 5.21m/17-01.00) also top the MVC in their events, with their season-best performances both coming at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup.
Last Time in Louisville
Indiana State had a pair of event winners when the Sycamores took part in the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational last year.
JaVaughn Moore stole the show for the Blue and White, breaking the school record in the 60m with a time of 6.68. Moore went on to break the school record three times last this season, with his top time of 6.63 coming at the MVC Indoor Championships and ranking in the top 25 in the nation.
Shomari Rogers-Walton also won the long jump at the meet, with his top mark of 7.55m (24-07.25) representing his indoor season best from last year.
Moore and Rogers-Walton both were MVC Athlete of the Week honorees following their performances in Louisville last season.
Weekly Winners
Indiana State track and field swept the MVC Men's Athlete of the Week awards following a standout showing at the
John Gartland Invitational, as
Wyatt Wyman was tabbed as the MVC Men's Track Athlete of the Week and
Kevin Krutsch was named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Wyman ran a career-best 600m time of 1:20.12 to take top spot in the event at the
John Gartland Invitational. In addition to moving up to third in program history in the event, he also set the Indiana State Indoor Track and Field Facility record and the
John Gartland Invitational meet record in the process. Not to be outdone, he also ran the third leg of the Sycamores' 4x400m relay that placed first with a facility and meet record time of 3:18.37, with his 4000m split coming in at 49.4. Wyman's 600m time is third among MVC athletes and 11th in the Great Lakes region. Indiana State's 4x400m relay team currently ranks first in the MVC and third in the Great Lakes region.
Krutsch became the first Sycamore since 2018 to clear seven feet in the high jump with his performance at the
John Gartland Invitational. He broke the meet and facility record in the event by clearing 2.15m (7-00.50), finishing second in the event and only losing out on top spot via tiebreaker. Krutsch's mark was the best of his career and put him in a tie for fifth in program history in the event. He ranks first in the MVC and in the Great Lakes Region, and eighth in the nation in the event.
The weekly award is the second for both Wyman and Krutsch in their careers. The weekly awards give Indiana State five MVC Athletes of the Week through the Sycamores' first three meets of the season, with
Ryann Porter,
William Staggs and
Isiah Thomas all picking up conference honors earlier this season. Indiana State has the most MVC Athletes of the Week (five) and honorable mentions (four) in the conference through the first three meets.
Up Next
Next week's competiton for the Sycamores features a split squad for the only time during the indoor season. Indiana State will play host to the Blue-White Classic, a one-day meet on Feb. 4, while also sending a contingent of athletes to the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame Feb. 3-4.
