Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line Coach Mark Smith announced retirement

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head football coach Curt Mallory announced Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line Coach Mark Smith is retiring on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Smith served as an assistant coach with Sycamores on two separate occasions joining ISU first from 1988-2002, before returning to Indiana State prior to the 2017 season. Over his career at Indiana State, Smith coached several defensive units that gained national acclaim while coaching 15 All-Conference players and six All-Americans.
 
"I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate Mark Smith as a friend and as a colleague," Mallory said. "He is one of the most respected guys I know in this profession. I want to thank him and Kim for all they have done for the Sycamore family over the years and for the impact they have made on the program."
 
Smith's coaching journey includes stints at Bowling Green (1982-85), Rose-Hulman (1986-87), Ball State (2003-08), San Diego State (2009-10), Michigan (2011-14), and Florida Tech (2015-16). Smith began his coaching career at Defiance High School in Ohio after graduating from Purdue with a bachelor's in 1979 and a master's from Bowling Green in 1983. Smith and his wife, Kim, have three children: Heather, Eric, and Craig.
 
The Sycamores will announce their new defensive line coach in the coming days.
