Purdue jumps ahead early as Sycamores fall to the Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State was unable to keep pace with the Purdue offense on Saturday afternoon as the Sycamores fell to the host Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium, 56-0.
 
The Sycamores (1-1) took the ball into the red zone twice in the second quarter with the game still in doubt. However, the Purdue (1-1) defense forced a turnover on downs on the first opportunity and recorded an interception in the end zone on the second chance to keep Indiana State off the board.
 
Dante Hendrix highlighted the Indiana State offense on the day with five catches for 90 yards. The redshirt senior wide receiver extended his catch streak to 28 consecutive games with a 17-yard drab in the second quarter and added receptions of 29 and 33 yards in the contest.
 
Gavin Screws paced the ISU offense at quarterback going 6-of-14 for 83 yards and a pair of interceptions through the air. Tee Hodge was the Indiana State top running back with eight carries for 30 yards.
 
Rylan Cole led all Indiana State players defensively with eight tackles in the contest, while Maddix Blacwell and Bilhal Kone both finished with seven apiece. Garret Ollendieck and Blake Surface paced the Sycamores with 1.0 tackles-for-loss apiece.
 
Purdue quarterback Aiden O'Connell targeted his favorite receiver Charlie Jones early and often as Purdue jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead. O'Connell finished 17-of-19 for 211 yards and four touchdowns through the air, while Jones picked up nine catches for 133 yards and three scores.
 
Sanoussi Kane was the top Purdue defensive player with seven tackles and a half-tackle-for-loss. Cam Allen added a 65-yard pick-six, while Jamari Brown recorded an interception in the end zone to highlight the PU defense.
 
How They Scored
  • An Indiana State fumble on the opening possession gave Purdue a short field and the Boilermakers took advantage of it. King Doerue capped a 4-play, 30-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run off the left side to put Purdue ahead 7-0 with 13:20 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Purdue went up 14-0 with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter as the Boilermakers capped a 6-play, 58-yard drive with an Aiden O'Connell seven-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Jones.
  • Purdue went ahead 21-0 on the O'Connell 26-yard touchdown pass to Paul Piferi to cap a 3-play, 43-yard drive with 6:44 remaining in the first quarter.
  • O'Connell found Jones for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 3:50 remaining in the second quarter to cap a 4-play, 61-yard drive and put Purdue ahead 28-0.
  • O'Connell found Jones for their third touchdown connection with 0:46 left in the first half to extend the Purdue lead to 35-0. The five-yard completion in the back right corner of the end zone capped a 5-play, 48-yard drive.
  • Dylan Downing took the ball up the middle for the one-yard touchdown plunge to give Purdue the 42-0 lead following the opening possession of the third quarter. The TD run capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:45 off the clock.
  • Cam Allen stepped in front of a Gavin Screws pass and returned it 65 yards for the interception and score to put Purdue up 49-0 with 6:43 to play in the third quarter.
  • Devin Mockobee added a 14-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter to put Purdue up 56-0. The carry capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive.
Inside the Numbers
  • Indiana State finished the contest with 145 total offensive yards in the game, including 94 passing yards.
  • The Sycamores were limited to seven first downs and went 3-for-16 on third down conversions.
  • Purdue finished with 521 total offensive yards, including 289 passing yards and 232 rushing yards.
  • The Boilermakers finished with 27 total first downs and held the time of possession edge with 31:47 of possession in the contest.
  • Purdue forced three Indiana State turnovers in the contest, while Indiana State took advantage of a punt return fumble to get in the turnover column.
News & Notes
  • Jayden Perry recorded his first forced fumble of the 2022 season as the sophomore long snapper hustled down the field early in the third quarter and jarred the ball loose to flip the field. It was ISU's second forced fumble of the 2022 season.
  • Dante Hendrix put the Sycamores in scoring position twice in the contest as the redshirt senior wide receiver hauled in both a 29-yard reception and 33-yard reception in the first half to give ISU a pair of red zone opportunities.
  • Hendrix finished the game with five catches and 90 yards, moving him closer to all-time ISU leader Sam Logan (196 catches, 2,385 yards - 2003-06) in both categories. Hendrix finished the game with 145 career catches and 1,871 career yards following his first action of the season.
  • Anthony Beacom made his Indiana State punting debut with a 48-yard punt in the fourth quarter that resulted in a Purdue fair catch at the PU 11-yard line.
  • Tee Hodge picked up his first reception of the 2022 season in the fourth quarter with a two-yard snag. He became the eighth ISU player with a catch this year.
  • Indiana State falls to 0-18 all-time against the Big Ten and 0-6 all-time against Purdue with the loss.
