Sycamore alum Geremy Guerrero signed by Houston Astros

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball alum Geremy Guerrero received a call this past week that many felt was a long time coming. The teammate and coach affectionately known as "G" signed a contract with the Houston Astros organization over the weekend and is headed down to their facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. to begin training for the remainder of the year.

For Guerrero, it was a whirlwind segment after he received the initial indication that this was a possibility from the Indiana State coaching staff. He had been working as the Sycamores' baseball graduate assistant for the 2022 season helping with the day-to-day and assisting with the pitching staff

"It was earlier this past week when the coaches called me into the office," Guerrero said. "They kind of gave me the heads-up that the Astros were interested. Coach (Brian) Smiley said it could be a week, could be a day when they call you and offer you."

For Guerrero, it was the following day as the left-hander received the official call that set off a whirlwind week that led him to today.

"My first initial thought was that I was stunned and speechless," Guerrero admitted. "A year out, I didn't think it was going to be possible, but I'm excited, anxious, and just happy for the opportunity."

Guerrero left the Sycamores after last weekend's baseball trip to Bradley University due to wanting one more trip with the team.

"The Astros offered me a deal to come down to their facility in West Palm Beach to start working out and getting back into shape and definitely wanted me down there the earlier the better," Guerrero said. "They were understanding about my wanting to get in one more trip with the guys and I'll be down there later this week to get back after it."

The 2021 Missouri Valley Pitcher of the Year and first five-time All-American in program history will look to recapture the form that saw him post a 10-1 record and 2.08 ERA in a standout senior campaign on the mound. Guerrero posted a 98:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over a career-high 99.1 innings as the Metamora, Ill. native became a bona-fide ace and one of the top pitchers in the NCAA over his final season.

He went at least six innings in each of his last 12 starts in the 2022 season and added a pair of complete games against Valparaiso and Illinois State to highlight his senior campaign. His eight-inning, three-hitter with 15 strikeouts back on March 5 put him on the map and sparked a stretch of six consecutive quality starts that included his first collegiate shutout in a two-hitter at Valpo. He wrapped up his final collegiate season in the 2021 NCAA Regional going 6.0 innings and taking a no-decision against Georgia Tech in the first game in Nashville, Tenn.

Guerrero will find out his fit within the Astros organization after a brief training period before shipping out to where the team sees his best fit for the remainder of the minor league season.

However, for the ISU alum, it's time to get head back to the mound.

"I'm extremely honored the Astros organization has given the opportunity to get back out there," Guerrero said. "It still feels like a dream and for parts of last week - it definitely did not feel real. I'm excited to get back at it and get back to work."

Guerrero finished out his Sycamore career with a 12-4 overall record with 26 starts over his five seasons with the Blue & White. He posted a 3.49 ERA over 173.0 innings with 166 strikeouts and just 39 walks allowed. Opponents hit just .224 overall against the lefty with the mark dropping down to .182 in his final season at Indiana State.
