TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men's basketball Head Coach
Josh Schertz announced the signing of Trenton Gibson (6-4/200/Murfreesboro, Tenn./Tusculum) for the upcoming season on Saturday. Gibson will join the Sycamores as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.
"Trenton is someone I have grown to admire over the years of competing against his teams at Tusculum. He has a tremendous amount of experience, and his IQ, toughness, and poise jump off the page when you feel him inside of competition," Schertz said. "He can manage and manipulate the game on both ends so he's very much in the same vein of all the great players I have coached where they not only compete at the highest level, but they have a deep understanding of how to win."
Gibson, who was the 2021 SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has written his name throughout the Pioneer record book. One of the most decorated players to wear a Tusculum jersey in the program's 111-year history, Gibson scored the sixth-most points in TU history with 1,620 over 106 games. Standing 6-foot-4, Gibson is the only TU player to record 1,500 points, 600 rebounds 400 assists and 100 steals in a career.
According to ESPN Draft Analyst Jonathon Givony, Gibson is considered one of the top NBA draft prospects outside of Division I. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native caught the eye of NBA scouts after leading TU with 17.2 points per game while also grabbing 5.9 rebounds and averaging 5.3 assists per game for the Pioneers last season. The guard shot 34.6 percent from behind the arc and 82.4 percent from the charity stripe.
Following the 2021-22 season, Gibson was named to the 2022 NCAA Division II Southeast Region All-District First Team as selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). It marked the second time in his career that Gibson earned NABC All-District accolades.
A three-time All-Conference standout at TU, Gibson scored 20 or more points in 10 games and dished out five or more assists in 16 games while helping the Pioneers to a 19-8 record and the SAC postseason.
Off the court, Gibson is a two-time First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American®. He graduated from Tusculum last May with his undergraduate degree in sport management in just three years. He garnered summa cum laud honors as he finished with a 3.95 GPA.
Gibson was a 2020 recipient of the SAC Elite 20 Award and was a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Tusculum President's List, Dean's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List. He is a two-time Division II Athletic Directors Association Honor Roll selection and is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. In 2021, he was the recipient of the D2CCA Southeast Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
As a freshman at TU, Gibson earned South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year and was named to the SAC All-Freshmen Team after playing in 29 games. During his rookie campaign, he led the Pioneers in assists and free throws and was second on the team with 13.1 points per contest.
He played his prep basketball at Blackman High School where he averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 assists and five rebounds per game his senior season. He earned All-District, All-Region, All-State and District Player of the Year honors as he helped the program to State Tournament appearances in 2016 and 2018.
Gibson is the fourth transfer signing with the ISU Basketball program for 2022-23 along with Jayson Kent of Bradley and Courvoisier McCauley of DePaul and Cade McKnight of Truman State.
