TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State softball completed a season sweep of Butler on Wednesday with an 11-5 victory over the Bulldogs at Price Field.
The Sycamores finish the season 2-0 against Butler after also defeating them on March 5 in Memphis.
Butler jumped out to a 1-0 after a Sycamore throwing error allowed a run to score. Butler got three runners on base in the beginning frame, but
Lexi Benko was able to work out of the jam.
After going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, the Sycamore offense came alive in the second, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. After a leadoff double,
Isabella Henning came around to score on a single up the middle from
Lexie Siwek. Following an
Annie Tokarek single,
TeAnn Bringle brought home Siwek with an RBI groundout.
Olivia Patton drove in the third run of the frame with a single to left field.
Indiana State extended their lead in the third, scoring three runs in the inning to go up 6-1.
Isabella Henning collected her second double of the afternoon which scored
Bella Peterson and
Cassie Thomerson. Henning would come around to score on an RBI single from Tokarek.
Butler would cut into the lead in the in the top of the fourth on a line drive solo shot over the wall in centerfield which made it a 6-2 game.
The Sycamores answered right away, getting an RBI single from
Bella Peterson to score Patton and a sacrifice fly from
Isabella Henning which scored
Abi Chipps to go up 8-2. That was Henning's third RBI of the game.
Cassi Newbanks entered to pitch to begin the fifth, replacing Benko who went four innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out a pair of Bulldog batters.
The Bulldogs got a run across in the frame courtesy of a Sycamore passed ball which made it a 8-3 game. Indiana State would get the run back in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch.
In the top of the sixth inning, Butler tacked a pair of runs on the board with an RBI single and their second home run of the game, a solo shot to left center which lowered the Sycamore lead to 9-5.
Adding to her already impressive day at the plate,
Isabella Henning hit a stand-up triple to left center to score Thomerson for her fourth RBI of the game.
Lexie Siwek drove in her second run of the game with her third hit which scored Henning and made it an 11-5 Indiana State lead.
Hailey Griffin worked the final inning and forced a pair of popups to leave the bases loaded and end the game, giving the Sycamores the 11-5 victory.
The Sycamores improve to 18-14 with the win while Butler falls to 19-13 on the year.
Lexi Benko picked up the win, moving her record to 9-7 this season.
Indiana State finished with 12 hits, with three hits apiece from Henning, Siwek and Tokarek.
Olivia Patton finished 2-for-3 while
Bella Peterson went 1-for-3.
Around the Horn
-Indiana State is now 6-1 against other Indiana schools this season and improve to 34-19 all-time against Butler.
-The Sycamores 12-hit effort is the eighth double-digit hit output of the season.
-Indiana State's 11 runs was the first double-digit scoring effort since March 19 against Valpo.

Isabella Henning now has eleven multi-hit games this season with her 3-for-3 effort today.

Lexi Benko lowered her ERA to 2.23 on the season which is third-best in the MVC.
-Three Sycamore hitters are now batting above .300 on the season with Peterson (.382), Henning (.372) and Siwek (.319).
