Sycamore Softball Falls on Road to Fighting Illini

URBANA, Ill. – Indiana State softball dropped a midweek contest to Illinois on Tuesday night with the Fighting Illini winning 5-0 at Eichelberger Field.

Bella Peterson picked up her MVC-leading 13th double of the season in the top of the first inning but that would be all for the Sycamores in the frame as the Illini got a pair of strikeouts to retire the side. Illinois jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the opening frame.

The Illini loaded the bases with one out in the second but Cassi Newbanks was able to get two-straight groundouts to get out of the jam.

After Indiana State went 1-2-3 in the third, Illinois put two runs on the board in the inning, getting a run in on an RBI double as well as a steal of home as the Illini put on a successful double steal play to take a 3-0 lead. Lyndsi Adamson entered for Newbanks with one out and the bases loaded but was able to get a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage in the inning.

The Sycamores got a pair of runners on in the fourth with an Isabella Henning single and a Peterson walk but were unable to convert and both were left on base. Lyndsi Adamson remained in the game for the bottom of the fourth and worked a 1-2-3 inning including her third strikeout of the evening.

In the bottom of the fifth after keeping the Sycamores off the base paths, Illinois tacked two more runs on the board with another RBI double as well as a bases-loaded walk which grew the Illini lead to 5-0.

Neither team would threaten to score over the final two innings as nobody reached base for either team, giving Illinois the 5-0 victory.

The Sycamores fall to 18-18 with the loss while Illinois improves to 23-13 on the season.

The Illinois victory gives them an 11-2 lead in the all-time series.
