Football alum, former CEO of the ISU Foundation Ron Carpenter passes away

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ron Carpenter, a former Indiana State offensive lineman and former CEO of the ISU Foundation, passed away on Saturday evening at age 66.

At this time, funeral arrangements have not been announced.

"I enjoyed my time working with Ron," Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales said. "He was a great advocate for Sycamore athletics and a fantastic ambassador for Indiana State University. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Julie, and his family during this time."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ron's family," head football coach Curt Mallory said. "I appreciate everything he and Julie have done for Indiana State and the football program. I've enjoyed the relationship we had and getting to know and spend time with him at our golf outings and around the program."

Carpenter, a Springfield, Ill. native, lined up on the Indiana State football team from 1974-76, serving as a co-captain of the squad during his playing career. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1977 and master's degree in 1982 from ISU.

Carpenter spent his career in non-profit management and served several roles at ISU, including CEO of the ISU Foundation from 2012-17. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from ISU in 1998.

Carpenter's accomplishments at the foundation include leading a development staff that increased the university endowment from $42.5 million in 2012 to $62.3 million, overseeing the dedication of the Larry Bird statue and scholarship campaign, which was the largest single-event fundraiser in university history at the time, and launching the Elevate campaign with the athletics department.

He also was involved with the restructuring of the foundation to more closely align it with the university as part of the unveiling of the new strategic plan in 2016.

Carpenter, along with former teammate Tunch Ilkin, were honored by teammates, family, and friends with Carpenter/Ilkin Football Endowment to benefit ISU Football this past fall. The Carpenter/Ilkin Football Endowment has raised more than $90,000 from more than 100 donors.
