TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Diego Gines and
Josue Urdaneta both homered in support of strong pitching performances by
Jake Ridgway and
Luke Patzner as Indiana State topped Southeast Missouri State in the Sycamores 2022 home opener on Tuesday afternoon, 10-1.
Gines connected on his first grand slam to stake Indiana State (8-6) to an early 5-0 lead, while Urdaneta drilled a pair of two-run home runs late in the game to provide all the offense the Sycamores would need to snap SEMO's (13-2) 11-game winning streak. Ridgway (1-0) went five one-hit innings in his third start of the season to secure the win, while
Luke Patzner (S, 1) struck out seven Redhawks over the final four frame to close out the ISU win.
Gines finished the contest 4-for-4 with a season-high five RBI in the contest, while Urdaneta extended his hitting streak with his pair of home runs in addition to a career-high four RBI as the Sycamores offense connected on 14 hits in the contest.
Jordan Schaffer,
Randall Diaz, and
Tyler Nelson added multi-hit games on the afternoon with Schaffer and Nelson both doubling in the win.
Ridgway took advantage of the early Sycamore lead to carry a perfect game into the fifth inning on the way to his first win of the 2022 season. The redshirt senior walked two and struck out a season-high seven batters shutting down the SEMO offense that entered the game hitting .312 from the plate as a team.
Patzner closed out the contest in an extended relief situation as the redshirt sophomore surrendered three hits and one run while striking out seven in his first save of the year.
SEMO was paced by Peyton Leeper's RBI double in the contest, while Andrew Keck added a double to highlight the Redhawks offense in the game.
Ethan Osborne (0-1) took the loss after going the first two innings allowing four runs while striking out four. Matt Perego, Jeb Callaghan, Joseph Karrall, Fischer Rausch, and Noah Stone went the final seven innings in relief.
How They Scored
- Jordan Schaffer scored on Sean Ross' infield single in the bottom of the first as the Sycamores utilized a three-hit inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
- Diego Gines connected on his first big fly of the 2022 season with a bases-clearing grand slam in the bottom of the third to give the Sycamores the 5-0 lead. Gines brought home Schaffer, Randall Diaz, and Josue Urdaneta with the blast.
- Gines added to the Sycamores totals in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Schaffer to put ISU up 6-0.
- Josue Urdaneta put the Sycamores up 8-0 with a two-run home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring Randall Diaz.
- Peyton Leeper put SEMO's first run of the game across the plate in the top of the eighth with a RBI double scoring Ty Stauss to put the score at 8-1.
- Josue Urdaneta connected on his second home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, this time driving in Randall Diaz, to put ISU ahead 10-1.

- Gines and Urdaneta's homers marked the second time multiple Indiana State hitters connected on home runs in the same game in 2022 and first since February 25 against Merrimack.
- Urdaneta's multi-home run game was Indiana State's first of the 2022 season and first since Jordan Schaffer connected on two home runs on May 28, 2021 against Evansville.
- Urdaneta recorded his third stolen base of the 2022 season in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying him up with Tyler Nelson for the team lead. His steal marked ISU's first stolen base since March 5 against Maryland.
- Jake Ridgway recorded his season-longest appearance on the mound on Tuesday as the redshirt senior went 5.0 innings in picking up the win. He previously worked 4.0 innings in each of his previous two starts prior to today's game.
- Luke Patzner went the final 4.0 innings for his first save in a Sycamore uniform.
