PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Indiana State jumped ahead early on a two-run single from
Luis Hernandez and strong pitching from
Matt Jachec and
Connor Fenlong shut the door on BYU as the Sycamores took the season-opening win on Friday afternoon, 3-2.
Indiana State (1-0) never trailed following Hernandez's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first scored
Miguel Rivera and
Diego Gines to give the Sycamores the early 2-0 lead.
Grant Magill added a late RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scoring
Josue Urdaneta before the Sycamores relied on the pitching staff to close out the game.
Jachec (1-0) struck out five of the first nine BYU (0-1) hitters en route to a strong outing, while Fenlong (S,1) went the final 2.2 innings in scoreless relief to secure the ISU win.
Jachec went 6.1 innings in his first collegiate start with the Sycamores. The redshirt-sophomore right-hander retired the first nine BYU hitters of the game and struck out six of the first 11 batters he faced in picking up his first win of the season. Jachec finished the outing surrendering six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
Fenlong came in relief of
Jake Ridgway in the top of the seventh and shut down the Cougars over the final 2.2 innings. The 2021 Missouri Valley First Team All-Conference selection pitched around a two-on, one-out jam to retire the side in the seventh and did not allow a runner to get into scoring position the rest of the way in his first save of the year.
Gines and
Josue Urdaneta both recorded multi-hit games for the Sycamores in the contest to lead the ISU offense. Gines added Indiana State's lone extra-base hit of the game with a two-out double in the fifth.
Mitch McIntyre and Hayden Leatham led BYU's offense on the day as the Cougars' duo both recorded two-hit games. Collin Reuter added a double, while Brock Watkins led off the sixth inning with a triple to right-centerfield to highlight the offense.
Jack Sterner (0-1) took the loss for BYU after allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five in 4.2 innings. Cy Nielsen, Carter Smith, and Justis Reiser went the rest of the way for the Cougars combining to allow two hits and a run while striking out five over the final 3.1 innings.
