Sycamores rally past Billikens in season opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State overcame a 14-point deficit in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter Monday morning, rallying to defeat visiting Saint Louis 64-62 inside Hulman Center.

Anna McKendree led all scorers with 19 points, while Del'Janae Williams added 15 and Chelsea Cain scored 14. Indiana State scored 31 of its 64 points in the fourth quarter.

After a slow start for both teams, Saint Louis used a 22-point third quarter to build a double-digit lead. With its backs against the wall, Indiana State came out firing in the final quarter, with Cain, McKendree and Williams combining for 29 points in the final 10 minutes. The Sycamores, once down 51-37, closed the game on a 15-2 run to open the season victorious.

First Half
McKendree got the Sycamores going early in the first quarter with a 3-pointer from the wing, as she scored the first five points for the Trees. Bella Finnegan added a 3-pointer from the corner late in the quarter, as Indiana State led 12-9 following a low-scoring opening quarter.

Saint Louis took its first lead of the game early in the second quarter, but McKendree went on a personal 5-0 run of her own to put the Trees back in front. Neither team got into a rhythm offensively, but baskets by Caitlin Anderson and McKendree inside the final minute gave Indiana State a slim 25-24 lead at the intermission.

Second Half
Del'Janae Williams connected on a pull-up jumper early in the third quarter to get on the board, but Saint Louis seized control with a 14-0 run to go in front by double-digits. Mya Glanton ended the run with a layup and Williams added a 3-pointer late in the quarter, but the Billikens took a 46-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

Indiana State opened the fourth quarter with baskets by Glanton and Cain, but SLU extended its lead to 51-37 with less than eight minutes remaining. From there, it was all Indiana State, as Williams kickstarted the Sycamore rally with a 3-pointer. Saint Louis led by double-digits with four minutes to go, but the game never seemed out of reach for the Sycamores despite the scoreline.

Cain started the go-ahead rally with an and-one off an inbounds play and Hattie Westerfeld made it a two-possession game with a second-chance bucket. Back-to-back 3-pointers by McKendree and Williams, the latter coming in transition off a McKendree steal, made it a 62-61 game and forced Saint Louis to take a timeout. The Sycamores went ahead inside the final minute on a McKendree floater and prevented Saint Louis from getting a good look off late in the game, sealing a dramatic, come-from-behind win for the Blue and White.
