TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Newcomers
Courvoisier McCauley and
Trenton Gibson wasted no time making an impact in the Blue and White Monday night as they combined for 41 points and 21 rebounds in Indiana State's 80-53 season-opening win against Green Bay inside the Hulman Center.
All 10 Sycamores who saw action found their name on the scoresheet, paced by McCauley's game-high 23 points. Gibson was the only other Sycamore in double-figures with 18 points while he and McCauley each notched a double-double with 11 and 10 boards, respectively.
McCauley knocked down six triples while shooting 8-of-16 from the field overall in the game, and Gibson shot an impressive 8-of-9 from the field.
After leading by just three points (34-31) at the half, Indiana State (1-0) turned it up on both ends of the court in the second half, outscoring Green Bay (0-1) 46-22 in the frame while holding the Phoenix to just one basket from the field in the last 13 minutes of the game. ISU's lead peaked at 27 on a
Masen Miller triple with 25 seconds to go.
First Half
Both teams got off to a slow start as nothing fell until almost three minutes into the game when Green Bay hit the first basket of the game. McCauley's first trey of the game gave ISU its first lead of the night, 7-6, at 14:54. The Sycamores went on to hit four triples in a two-minute span, and an 8-0 ISU run was capped off by a steal and no-look pass from
Julian Larry to
Jayson Kent for the layup at 9:04 that put the Sycamores up 22-14.
Green Bay responded with a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 23-22, but McCauley immediately snatched the lead back with a bucket from deep and later pushed ISU's lead to 31-25 with his third triple of the game at 2:25. Larry connected from deep with just under a minute to go in the half to help the Sycamores head into the break up 34-31.
Second Half
McCauley continued to light it up beyond the arc in the second half, hitting back-to-back triples at 16:36 to push ISU's lead to 46-38. That lead hit double digits on
Xavier Bledson's feed to Larry under the basket with just under 10 minutes left, and Gibson hit double-figures on the scoresheet with a layup that extended ISU's lead to 58-54 at 9:14. A Gibson and-one followed by his lone trey of the night made it 70-50 ISU with 4:32 to go, and McCauley and Miller each added another 3-pointer each in the closing minutes to seal the victory.
