Sycamores welcome Missouri State and Miami (Ohio) for weekend Tri-Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State is home for the first time in the 2022-23 season as the Sycamores welcome Miami (Ohio) and Missouri State to the Vigo County Aquatic Center for their meet of the year.

The competition will start on Friday night at 6 p.m., while Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m. at the Aquatic Center. Missouri State and Miami's men's team will also be competing this weekend.

"We're excited to have our first official home meet of the season this weekend," ISU head swimming and diving coach Josh Christensen said. "Missouri State and Miami are both really strong programs that will provide excellent competition. All three teams decided to "suit up" this weekend and get an unrested meet in tech suits in before our mid-season invites later in the Fall. It's going to make for a very fast, competitive meet. We're looking forward to the challenge and using it to learn and progress as we move through the season."

The Sycamores are back in the pool for the third time this season and first since winning the Valley Showcase on October 21-22 at the Flames Natatorium. Indiana State dominated the event featuring Illinois State, Northern Iowa, and Illinois Chicago with ISU claiming 25 heat wins in the pool, including sweeping all four relay events.

The weekend meet features two of the Valley's top teams over the last five seasons with Missouri State and Indiana State consistently finishing in the top-three at the conference meet. The two teams battled last year in Springfield, Mo. with Missouri State topping the Sycamores 221-132 over November 5-6, 2021.

It also marks the first time Indiana State and Miami (Ohio) have competed against each other in the pool. Miami has picked up wins over Oakland and Cincinnati, while falling at Ohio this past weekend.

Indiana State continues to showcase its impressive depth this season as the Sycamores have a variety of athletes that have the ability to score this year. ISU also boasts a number of top-three positions in the Missouri Valley this year paced by both Madie Rutan (100 & 200 Backstroke) and Alexandria Cotter (200 IM & 400 IM).

The Sycamores also turned in the conference's best time in the 400 Freestyle Relay in the last meet with the quartet of Chloe Farro, Kaimi Matsumoto, Peyton Heagy, and Alexa Szadorski turning in a 3:28.61 to lead the Valley.

Additional athletes in the top-three in the Valley this year include Chloe Farro (50 Free - 23.86, 3rd) and Andrea Putrimas (500 Free - 5:06.68, 3rd), while the Sycamores' 200 Free Relay (1:35.59, 2nd), 200 Medley Relay (1:44.47, 3rd), 400 Medley Relay (3:49.12, 3rd).

ISU's last meet saw Peyton Heagy earn Missouri Valley Freshman of the Week honors as the Peru, Ill. native competed in the 50 and 100 Free, while adding a third-place result in the 100 Breaststroke. She also took the third leg in the Sycamores' 200 and 400 Free Relays.

The Sycamores have several athletes coming off wins heading into the weekend. Dorotea Bukvic topped the field in the 200 Breaststroke event with a time of 2:21.03, while Andrea Putrimas took the title in both the 500 and 1000 Freestyle events. Marni Gray (100 Fly), Kaimi Matsumoto (100 Breast), and Madie Rutan (100 Back) are also coming off individual wins at the Valley Showcase.
